Just over 2 miles west of the 405 on Sunset turn north (the only way you can turn) on Mandeville. First Stop sign (Westridge) turn left and continue 2.3 miles to the top and fire gate. Watch posted parking signs, no parking right at the top on weekends. Over the fire gate and 3.7 miles to the top. Single track parallels the fire road and is best ridden from the top back to your car.

• Trail UpdateWestridge Single Track-With Sully gone this is really the only option for a short local ride. Fortunately single track is great fun. Can do fire road up and single track down in 45 min.

• Trail UpdateDusty Does Westridge-Rode this from the gated entry to NIKE with Mrs Joints Last week (her First time). This is a very long gradual incline that offers spectalar veiws of both the Santa Monica Bay, Centry city, and catilina on one side and the vally on the other. The single track is far more challanging then the dirt fireroad but for a beginer the road is a great introductory route. I did my usual herboligy study of the surrounding area and mounted up for the incrediable downhill that brought me back to my car. Too much fun, nothing like the highspeed downhill cooldown to dry the sweat and reward the spirit for the efforts of the climb. My wife who desended much slower, later told me she understood why I like to browse this website, Fill my camel,throw my bike on the back of my truck, roll up & roll out in search of rides and times like these.

• Trail UpdateFire Road-The fire road is still in good condition after all the rains. I road 2 days after the heavy rains (around 1-12-05)earlier this month and then a week later. There is almost no difference except for part of the fire road is slightly eroded away... still entirely ridable though. (see sullivan's trail for the single track update). email me if you have questions... I ride this trail regularly.

• Trail UpdateWeeeeee!-Westridge singletrack is super grippy and very fast right now. A couple
  of small, shrinking puddles are all that remain of this weeks rains,
  otherwise it's drying nicely. Hopefully as the green vegetation pops up
  riders will stay on the trail and keep it as skinny as possible in the
  obvious places.

• Trail UpdateSULLIVAN CANYON-I RODE THE CANYON UP TO DIRT MULLHOLLAND LAST FRIDAY, AFTER THE RAINS OF THE PAST TWO WEEKS. THE CREEK WAS FULL OF WATER FOR THE MIDDLE THIRD OF THE TRAIL. THERE ARE LOTS OF LOOSE ROCKS AND SHALE, MAKING IT A LITTLE MORE TECHNICAL THAN NORMAL, BUT THE TRAIL WAS IN PRIMO SHAPE AND VERY TACKY, UPPING THE SPEED FACTOR CONSIDERABLY. ABOUT TWO-THIRDS OF THE WAY UP, THERE IS A MASSIVE TREE UPROOTED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAIL AND A HIKE-A-BIKE AROUND IT. ALL IN ALL, IT'S GOOD CLEAN (MAYBE A LITTLE DIRTY) FUN.

• Trail UpdateSulli. Cyn./Westridge/Nike-Took an early morning ride down Sulli and back up Westridge to Nike Station. Sulli. Creek is dry and dusty. Climb up Westridge is also dry, dusty and hot. Fairly crowded in the early morning with hikers, runners.

• Trail UpdateLOST TOOL-On Sunday, November 16 I lost a Schrade Multitool on the Westridge fire road. It was in a black sheath and was a plyer, knife, screwdriver, etc. If you are going to the road keep an eye out at the bottom of the short downhill before the short climb up to NIKE. I you have found it pleeeease email me. By the way thanks John and Barb for the inner tube. I wrote in my last update that it leaked but later found 1 thorn that I missed so my fault. I hope I can repay you the favor sometime. Maybe we should get Kevlar for our tires, John :)

• Trail UpdateNike Station Area Lost Wheel-Yes I had thorns arrrrg also, and was the guy who donated a tube, stay on the main trail.

• Trail UpdateTHORNS!!!! ARRRRG!!!!-My wife and I rode Westridge to NIKE. What a beautiful day! We could see Catalina and downtown LA. The rains have done little to the trail except keep the dust down. My wife is a beginner and I am a novice so about 3 miles into the ride I started doing extra credit(the little single tracks that parallel the fire road). All riders beware!!! I got lots of nasty thorns in both front and rear tires most of which penetrated into the innertube. I took off my rear tire and started patching the leaks w/ a patch kit I bought yesterday(LUCKY). After 6 patches I still had several leaks. Thank you to the guy who gave me his patch kit to fix my tire($@$!!%! to all the JERKS who blew by me with out even saying a word). After 12 patches I still had leaks and along come a couple in their 50's who stopped and gave me an extra inner tube. It was old and it had a leak but it got me back to my car(PUMP, RIDE, PUMP, ETC). These guys were parked at Muholland so they were almost back and I noticed the man had tons of thorns in his tires. I asked him where he rode and low and behold he took the same single tracks I took. His wife gave him a little crap then my wife gave me a lot of crap...all the way back. Oh well, we are typical men. Thank you soooo much folks. Drop me an email if you ever read this review same to the guy who gave me the extra patch kit. And to all the others who were too good to even ask 2 mountain bikers on the side of the road if they were OK next time it may be you.

• Trail UpdateNike/Sulli. Cyn./Westridge-Rode the Dirt Mulholland/Sulli. Cyn./Westridge Loop this morning. Started at Nike and rode down Sulli. and rode back up Westridge. Sulli. still has many trees down so watch it going around the corners. The stream crossings are also dry but damp in shaded places. Trail is rocky with very little dust. Westridge trail hard packed due to the rain from last week. Very little dust. Saw several bikers and hikers. Day was cloudy but warm with good visibility, perfect fall day in So. Cal.

• Trail UpdateFire Road Work-Grader and work crew were out on the road today, repaired the washed out section near the bottom and graded the road up to the Westridge/Canyonback sign. Watch for soft spots if you are bombing the fire road. Flowers are also still blooming quite nicely. :) (Anybody know what the yellow flowers along the road up by the Nike base are? No, not mustard, even the ranger was stumped. BTW, please answer on the regular board.)

• Trail UpdatePaula-Sounds like you need to buy a map, but I'll save you the trouble. Westridge is the East ridge of Sullivan Canyon (it's the West ridge of Mandeville). Sullivan Ridge is the West ridge of Sullivan Cyn. You can loop Westridge and Sullivan Cyn. many ways. Some folks ride down Westridge singletrack or fireroad and take the pavement to Bayliss to the bottom of Sullivan Cyn. and climb back up to Dirt Mul. Some folks park at the bottom of Sulli Cyn. and climb it to Dirt Mul and come back down Westridge (or down Sulli Ridge and then take the Goat Trail, AKA Elevator Shaft, back down into the Cyn. It's just past where the dirt turns to pavement, but good luck finding it.) There are other ways into Sulli Cyn. but if you're having trouble on Westridge I'd skip those - skidding is not good for the trails so you need to be using way more front brake. Have fun exploring.

• Trail UpdateWestridge-So, I am finally figuring out which trail is which--I think. Once before I went to the end of Reseda and rode 3.5 miles to the Nike site. I found Sullivan on the way back--went around the gate marked Sullivan. I rode past the 2 small trees---a wicked single track--I think this is Sullivan Canyon??? But I just rode down a few miles---great downhill, but since I had to turn around and ride back I didnt go too far. So this last week I went the other way so I could go uphill first. I took 405---exited on Sunset--to Mandeville--to Westride. I wanted to go up Westride and down Sullivan. But then I didnt know where Sullvan would end up or how to get back to my car. So we just rode up Westride--also called Sullivan ridge west?? It is 3.5 miles to the nike site. The trail is in good condition except that if you brake too much on the way down you can slide. At the start of the ride--look off to the left for a great view of the ocean, nice scenery most of the way.A few single tracks off of the fire road--only took one, I will take more the next time. They looked fun. I am just wondering if there is a way to get to Sullivan Canyon off of Westride???Or do I have to go to dirt Mulholland to the gate and then past the 2 trees??? I am dying to ride the other 2--Sullivan Ridge and the canyon. I will definately be back! They look awesome! Email me if you know these trails well, I want to ride again.

• Trail UpdateWestridge Good/ Sullivan BETTER-From the gate, Westridge is still in good shape after the heavy rains we have recently experienced. I took Westridge to Dirt Mullhuland, then down Sullivan Canyon this morning. The small stream at the bottom of Sullivan Canyon has turned into a raging river. The river has washed out more than 50% of the trail once you get into the bottom of the canyon. I rode for almost 4 miles in the overgrown stream. I do not recommend Sullivan Canyon unless you want to get very wet navigating the unseen rocks on the bottom of the brown colored river. The loose rocks make it difficult to get much traction. If you are in for a wet and wild ride, then head down Sullivan Canyon, but be prepared for a hidden rocks to dismount you from your bike and set you nicely in the stream.

• Trail UpdateRide to the top and take a left on Mulholland fire rd. for about a 1/2 mile. Turn left on Sullivan fire road and left again (in about another 1/2 mile)on Farmers fire rd. You will end up at the end of Queensferry rd. You can ride back up, taking a left on bayliss and another on Westridge, but it is very steep. It's better to go with someone else and drive separately, leaving one car at the bottom and one at the top. If you like to get wet, try it on a day afer heavy rains. There are several places where the stream crosses the track and where the stream is the track, almost hub deep.

• Trail UpdateNot To Worry-Well as it turns out “they” haven’t taken anything away from good old Westridge. The construction equipment was being used to clean up / repair the water drainage flood control area in the canyon to the east of Westridge. Westridge and its single track continues to be the quick fun out and back (or loop with Sullivan ridge / canyon) that it always has been. Enjoy!

• Trail UpdateWestridge.... Trouble????-I think every one knows about this trail. It is one ridge east of Sullivan ridge. I have some interesting news however.

  Road Sullivan ridge to the top and took the single track all the way back down. As I neared the end of the single track, near Camp Josepho, I looked across to Westridge and saw some HUGE earthmoving equipment on and above Westridge. This didn’t seem to be the usual yearly grading of the fire road. The equipment, two dozers and a semi plus several pickup trucks seemed to be running a pipe of some type up the existing single track to the top of that first hill, the one that ends at the fire gate where Westridge starts. I’m not sure what this means and will try to ride Westridge tomorrow morning to take a look. I’m not sure if that first hill (bottom of Westridge) is protected by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy or not. The “sign” for the conservancy is about ¼ mi past the area where the work is going on. I’d hate to think someone has somehow gotten a hold of that property and is stating to build a house, you know… putting in the utilities first! I road Westridge a few weeks ago and didn’t see any signs of development at that time. Haven’t we paved over enough of LA? Westridge is the first place I ever road a mountain bike, 1985…

  Anyone have any info? Please post. If I get over there this week I’ll find out whats up.
