Towsley Canyon - #TowsleyCanyon
Socal - Los Angeles County - Santa Clarita NickNames: #TowsleyCanyon
1) From the San Fernando Valley head north on the 405 or I5. Stay on I5 north at the 14 split. Get off at Calgrove Blvd, turn left under fwy. Park at dirt lot about 1/4 mile past fwy. This is the entrance to Towsley Canyon or Ed Davis Park.
2) 5 North To Calgrove, left 1/4 mile to park entrance. A small sign is the only thing that shows a park is there! Enter the park and drive as far as you can go, maybe a mile. The road ends at a parking lot. Make sure you look at a bulletin board. There is a map of all the trails. There are many options to choose from. We went without checking this out and wished we had once we saw the map! There are maps and an overview of the park for you to take. Nice touch, the park is cared for, so take care of it.. Thomas Guide page 4640 F4
3) Get off the 5 (Golden State) freeway at Calgroove. On the west side of the freeway a hundered yards or so south of the off ramp you will see a turn off with a forestry gate. You can drive in and park up by the Ranger Station or stay outside the gate. I stay outside in case I am back after dusk. Thomas Guide page 4640

- Trail UpdateFun, Short, A Lot Of Hikers-I ride this trail pretty regularly and most of the time it's a blast. I recommend riding the loop counter clockwise (Creekside first). I read the post of another MTBer that rides it the other way, but I must not be as fit as he is. I'm not sure I could do it in that direction. As I kind of fancy myself a cross country rider and novice roadie, lately I have found the ride to be too short. I recently started riding Towsley plus East Canyon (about a half mile up the Old Road from the Towsley trailhead)There are a couple of ways to ride East Canyon. You can do an up and back all the way up to Mission Peak or you can hang a left on Weldon Canyon and ride a short woop de doo that connects you to the Old Road and then about a mile and a half of concrete back to Towsley.
Also beware that Towsley Canyon is a popular hiking and trail running place. Lots of personal trainers and fitness types sneering at you as you grind out the switchbacks. Fun nonetheless

- Trail UpdateGreat Ride! Great Condition...-I went on Towsley Canyon's big Towsley trail (4.5 miles) today with a friend of mine. We did the loop from left to right, so we started from the steep side. On the way up, we noticed that most of the dirt was hard-pack wit a few sections having a bit of loose dirt. On our way down, we encountered some loose spots but most of it was hard-pack. No section of the trail was overgrown to the point that it became un-ridable. It was an awesome ride as the trail was in awesome condition and the people we saw were really nice and friendly to us bikers :). This is no beginner trail as some parts can get steep and narrow AND it as several tight switchbacks, but it is definitely doable by someone with a bit of experience.

- Trail UpdateA Bit Of A Climb-Okay, here goes. I am fairly new to Mtn biking. Just got into it after a 3 yr break. My buddy has been riding for 20 + yrs and told me to join him for a trail ride. The 1st 3 miles is a section of switchbacks which are pretty steep. I got off a few times to walk since my pedal power is pretty weak as of now. Be advised: on the way up, mountain on one side and straight cliff on the other. Not great for a beginning rider at all. Once at the top, the down hill section is about 1.5 miles and pretty steep at some parts. Quick turns, rock obstacles, although trail is pretty well kept up. Have fun be careful. Not for beginners.

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon And Mentryville-I saw a mountain lioness with two cubs near the silver water tower on the Mentryville Pico Canyon trail. The three of them were at the edge of the fire road laying down and when they saw me, 25 yards away, the cubs took off while the lioness stared at me, then took off. The cubs looked like they weighed about 30-40 pounds each, while the lioness probably weighed upwards of 80-90 pounds. Be careful!!!

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon-Rode this today first clockwise and then anticlockwise. Nice trail, bit short for my taste. Enjoyed the climb in both directions but more enjoyable decending anti-clockwise.
Got a nasty puncture from a 4in nail, but other than that all in good condition and well looked after.
Many thanks for the previous posts, gave a good idea of what to expect before I rode it.

- Trail UpdateOvergrown... Very Overgrown-
I couldn't agree more with the previous post. I'd never seen that mustard weed get so big before. In some sections it gets nearly 8 ft. tall!! Have I been riding this trail backward??? I usually go up the fire road, pass the ranger station and start climbing after I hike-a-bike through the creek crossing and then go up through all the switchbacks. It seems "easier" that way... at least for me. Maybe next time I'll try going the other way around.

- Trail Updateouch! it's been a while since my last venture to Towsley. Did I mention ouch! It was a lot of hike & bike for me as the hills were to steep. The downhill was sweet though! If I was to mention anything of concern it is the overgrowth of brush on the trails. At times I couldn't see in front of me and was getting hit on both sides with brush. The crossing at the creek at the end was great as it added to the punishment I got!

- Trail UpdateVery Nice!!-
I went to check this trail out a few weeks ago. It is one of the funnest trails I've ridden in a while. Very well maintained, mostly singletrack, challenging climb, fun downhill, technical switchbacks, and even a little creek to top it off. The views are excellent and the tailhead is easy to find. Just be careful. There are lots of hikers, including kids.

- Trail UpdateGreat Ride And Views!-My first time to ride up here...we took the wiley cyn way as everyone recommended. Saw a few hikers and 1 biker going the other way.
We got there around 730am...it took us about 2 hours to get to the top since we are newbies and took a billion breaks....mostly hiked all the steep parts. Awesome view though, and honestly, i dont know how anyone can actually ride all the way up this thing. It was a good work out though.Going down was awesome as usual, switchbacks were a little scary...gotta slow down on those turns.
I wonder if going the other way would be better?

- Trail UpdateEd Davis Trail-Still a great local ride. 5.1 mi of 100% single track loop. The loop has to be ridden from the riverbed side to the other. This gets the climb over with quick and gives a longer downhill. Some holes on the downhill, I think they are hoof marks but no prolem for suspension. 5-24-06

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon Loop-I rode this trail today. Part of it are narrow, steep and potholed (looks like horses hooves broke through a lot of the gopher holes in the trail.) Some of it is a bit too technical for me, but it's still a great ride. At the top some of the mustard is eight feet high on both sides, but the trail is still passable. You have to carry the bike over the rocks through the narrows, but its only a short distance and well worth the effort.
There is going to be a trail work project here on National Trails Day, June 3, so come on out at 8:30 if you are interested in improving the trail conditions.

- Trail UpdateThe darkside is in near epic shape, smooth , wide and moiste. Thanks for the trail work!!!! Six people working up there yesterday. The creek crossing isn't do-able, but the rest is great. The sunny side is hardpack with waterbars....didnt get to do the innerloop, mechanical difficulties!

- Trail UpdateTrail Work At Towsley, June 4-Steve,
You are right about the overgrown condition of the Towsely upper loop trail--I have a picture taken recently in the stretch above the switchbacks showing me reaching up and unable to touch the top of the mustard.
However--I have been working on Wednesday and Saturday mornings this spring, along with a bunch of other volunteers, to clear brush and repair storm damage on this trail. If you got on over the crest, to the Wiley Canyon side, you probably noticed how well cleared that section is. So far we have worked about two miles up from the Wiley trailhead, almost to the top. We had 14 people out last Saturday and did a stretch of about a half mile from the Narrows past the first switchback up to the oil seep on the Towsley side. There is still a lot to do. How about joining us on Saturday, June 4, from 8:30 to 12:30? This is National Trails Day, and REI is helping MRCA get out volunteers to do trail repair at Towsley and Wiley canyons that day. We expect to have about 200 volunteers, but we can always use a few more good men (and women).

- Trail UpdateTrail Conditions-This trail is unridable unless you drive a trail tractor. The brush has grown to over 6 feet tall and this makes the trail about a foot wide. Also the thistle is killer on your legs.

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon- Santa Clarita-I rode up from Towsley Canyon, which is 99.8 percent rideable. There are few sections of the trail that are washed out, but they are easily passable. There is plenty of water in the creek too, but don't drink it. There are plenty of sulfer springs that feed into the streams - it's the brown foamy stuf floating in spots.
The narrows are narrow, with seveal blind switchbacks and brush that is very high and crowded in some places.
Down in Wiley Canyon, just out of the narrows, the first 100 yards are rutted. The Next 100 yards are completely washed out. But keep going because at the statr of this second 100 yards, is the best pat of this ride, as the river walls narrow dramatically and you can see the sandstone, granite and sand in an artful pattern on both sides of the river walls.
Durinf that second 100 yards, it's hard not to get your feet wet, but it's worth it. After that, it's a quarter mile or so back to the parking lot.

- Trail UpdateTowsley Is Open, Rode It 3-21-05-I saw that the trail was open and really wanted to see the trail before we get even more rain. The flowers were absolutely amazing. The rains and lack of use have really led to some overgrown sections. The plants were so high and close to the trail that they were shifting my combo brake/shifter levers. Still a few unridable sections. The 'narrows' section will be a 'trials' course for quite a while I believe. It is amazing how the terrain has changed from the storms. Well worth riding to see the flower display.

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon Ride, Feb 7-On February 7 I rode the Towsley Canyon trail, starting at the Wiley Canyon parking lot. (There is a $3 charge here, but you can park for free at the first lot just inside the park gate.) The January rains washed out the park entrance road where it crosses the creek, so you can't drive beyond the Wiley lot, but you can bike or hike in.
Going up Wiley canyon, from the north side of the lot, the trail is an old oil well service road, but it is so overgrown that its practically singletrack most of the way. About a quarter mile up the little creek jumped its bank and ran down the side of the trail, then made a 2ft deep gully where it crossed back over the trail. Beyond that there are stretches where the trail is gullied 6' to 8" deep down the center, but it's all bikeable. There is one large shale slide, 2 to 3ft deep, across the trail for 10yd, and one other 3ft deep gully across the trail.
A mile in, beyond the flat rest area, is a very steep 150yd stretch that I've never been able to ride. It's worse than ever now, with two 5yd long slides across the trail about 1/3 and 2/3 of the way up the steep.
Beyond the steep stretch the singletrack has blooming lupine, waist high, closing in on both sides. Another half mile on there are a couple more short steep sections, with 4x4 timbers installed as water blocks.
At the crest, along some sweet singletrack, there are chocolate lilies sprouting right alongside the trail. Should be a great display in April.
Coming down the Towsley Canyon side there are entire hillsides covered with lupine in blossom. Talk about "purple mountained majesty"! The singletrack section through the eight switchbacks is in great shape and a real joy to ride. Just keep it slow at a couple of the right-turn switchbacks, or you will be sailing off a nearly vertical 200ft cliff.
The last 30yd before the narrows is a boulder field and badly gullied. Some interesting riding here.
In "The Narrows", where the creek passes between 200ft vertical walls only 25ft apart, the debris lodged on the sides indicates water was flowing 8 or 10ft high here during the January rains. Now it's only a few inches deep, and with the help of some stepping stones I was able to carry the bike across the two creek crossings without even getting my feet wet. Parts of the "trail" are just debris and rock fields, but the unrideable stretch is probably only 100yd long--maybe less if you're a better rider than me.
The last mile from here to the Nature Center is old access road. Good condition except for one 2ft deep gully across the road and a temporary detour through the chaparral and another shallow ford where the creek washed out all three culverts at its crossing.
The half mile paved road from the Nature Center back to the Wiley parking lot is in good shape, even where the creek decided to make a new crossing and a new culvert has been installed.
To sum up: about 95% of this trail is currently rideable, its a good workout, and the views are great!

- Trail UpdateTowsley Figure 8 Way!-Did this ride with a buddy! - We did Towsley, climbed up thru the creek area & then up the switch backs, down the back side, then climbed up the single track again & emptied out right above the ranger quarters. We then headed up The Old Road & over the 5 Freeway to climb East Canyon from the South East side. We climed that & then came down East Canyon...kind of a huge ugly figure eight....look down some posts to see the directions! took about 2:15 mins of wheel spinning!--trails are in good condition!

- Trail UpdateThe wildflowers are going off! Some displays will
send you off the trail so make sure to stop and
enjoy the hillsides of poppies and lupines. It
appears that there has been much trailwork lately
and there are many suddenly loose, recently
worked on sections that sneak up on you. Some of
the switchbacks have changed for some reason-
some harder, some easier. Some very sad
news....The steepest climb after the switches
(counterclock) has been re-routed and sissy-fied.
(R.I.P. I'll miss you, you steep bastard!). Other
than that everything is in fine shape and the
clockwise steepy is very cleanable now. The
narrows is an interesting study in post-fire erosion.
It's choked with mud and ash which doubles as a
flat mtb highway.

- Trail UpdateTowsley-It had been a few years since I had last been on this ride but it won't be that long next time. Even with the fire damage this is a jewel of a ride with great views, challenging climbs and switchbacks and not a whole lot of traffic. I guess the only complaint anyone could make about this ride would be that it is too short. To solve this problem we did the main 5 mile loop counterclockwise first (heading up the switchbacks at the west end)before turning left on the inner loop (Canyon View trail)once we got near the parking area. Once done with the Canyon Loop we then did the main loop again clockwise. Add in a couple trips to the bathrooms and you can squeeze out about 12 miles. This isn't an easy 12 miles though. Though the climbs at the west or east ends are not lengthy by San Gabriel or Santa Monica mountain standards they are tough and steep. Climbing up the east end with all the switchbacks was particularly tough with no warm up for the legs. On the return trip down those switchbacks one needs to be very careful in 2-3 spots. There is one right hander where if you miss it and fall to the left your probably looking to pay the ultimate penalty by flying for 300-400 feet into the bottom of the canyon. If your not very confident about your ability to handle tight switchbacks on a steep downhill with lots of exposure than do the smart thing and walk 2-3 of those and live to ride another day. Even the Canyon Loop trail has some steep climbing.
Rocky Peak seems pretty close as the crow flies and maybe one day you'll be able to conect there from Towsley and have a true epic ride. Nevertheless this is a great trail.

- Trail UpdateTowsley Toasted...-Towsley Canyon (Ed Davis Park) just got toasted in the fire near the Newhall Pass and Stevenson Ranch. East Canyon served as a great stopper for firefighters to put out the flames, but it is now totally covered in pink flame retardent. Towsley Canyon got burnt too, so it looks like we'll have to wait a while until the hills recover here. This was part of the fire that started in Val Verde and spread to Simi Valley and Pico Canyon.

- Trail UpdateTowsley The "EASY" Ride!-Well I am not sure how many of you do this but it is different & fun or a "change of pace" Especially since the FORESTS are CLOSED! Here it is: Instead of parking at the entrance & riding in the OBVIOUS WAY....Park your car as usual, BUT ride the pavement (The Old Road) south or left if you are standing at the entrance to the park! As you ride about 1/3 or so of a mile & on your right you will see another entrance to the east end of the Mountain range of Towsley park! This is a very fun up hill & you can get cookin coming down ...but don't go fast on the blind curves!!!..There is a pretty fun out an back single track on the right as you are climbing the fire road! Many people don't take the time to enjoy this & much of the time there is no one else on this as everyone else is at the other end of the park! Ok back to the ride up the fire road. Once you pass a gate you are almost at the top.(This gate has always been open for me the past 2 years.) You will come to a flat area that you can go right or left. DO NOT GO RIGHT AS THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. You can turn around & come back down or turn left & that dirt road will pour you out on pavement in which you will want to turn right & then an imediate left over the 5 Freeway! Once you go over the 5 Freeway you will be on The Old Road again!!! Turn left & get ready for a VERY FAST pavement decent back to your car!....NOW GO RIDE!!!

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon-Trail conditions were good. Residual moisture from last weeks rains were still evident in the shaded areas. The stream still has water in it. The S/T going up (counter-clockwise)had a constant bumpiness to it, that made it real hard to do in the middle, add tight uphill switchbacks and you had a tough uphill ride. The downhill was a blast. Long fast sections and minimal hikers (due to Superbowl Sunday), made it a great time.

- Trail UpdateI was actually at Towsley on Wednesday; I didn't see anyone else on bikes--just a lot of hikers--quite a few for a weekday afternoon.
You are right, Towsley is a lot of fun coming down; however, there are always a lot of hikers up there. I've never really been able to ride it down the way I wanted to...no matter what day of the week, or time of the day, it's always packed.
Any rider who ventures up to Towsley should use extreme caution on the downhill. It's very tempting to fly down, but I've never gone down without seeing at least three people hiking up--even at 6:00 a.m.

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon-How ne1 rides UP this trail I'll never know! Myself and 2 buddies took the main trailhead up starting off from the second parking lot. The map here is deceptive.. there were 3 parking lots that we saw. One right in the entrance, one where T1 starts, then the last one near T16 (we parked at T1). The trailhead is marked though, so you know where basically to start. We followed it by the numbers.. never saw T2 or T3.. T4 starts a treacherous uphill grade to the right (does not go straight as the map shows.. maybe the map has T4 and T5 confused). The next marker we saw was T8 and we knew we should be close to the top. A little more uphill and you hit a nice shaded area (at 1pm) with a little grass to recoup on. I had to walk my bike most of the way up a little past T2, but I'm a smoker so gimme a break! My bros fared a little better, but there were stretches where we were all walking it up. Took us over an hour to reach the peak past T8. There are a few short sections of even or slight down on the way up, but know that you will be winded at the top, whether or not your name is Lance Armstrong. The downhill was f'ing sweet though.. tight single track and some kill switchbacks that I had to one foot it on to be safe. Go off the trail here and you are rolling downhill for a bit. There are some DEEP holes (we saw two) in the trail so watch out.. one of my bros ate it on one. The other rode off the trail and saved his ass by leaning into the hill.. he saw a gopher he didn't want to run over :) There's only one oily patch we saw that has a small runout to get around which is tight, or just be smart and walk over the corrugated steel there to avoid getting any of that crappy tar on your shiatz! After the single track ends you hit a rocky stream area that is almost impossible to traverse without walking, but I'm sure some biking gods have done it. A little more single track, then you open up to the wide service road and it's a last one eats the egg to the parking lot. Keep to the right on the trail on the way down if you want to get home, the offshoots you'll see are other trails for strong of heart! Next time we're gonna go the opposite way.. either way up is a biotch but the ride down made it worthwhile. The opposite way has some harder downhill then the T1-T16 way, but that's just my opinion.. after walking up it, I was wondering if I wanted to ride down it! Great views here, bring a camera.. and water.. lots of it :) Check out the map here for reference to the T#'s. Also, we went at about noon today and saw NO ONE on the trail, and only 2 bikers near the bottom. And near T4, it's muddy and it smells with stagnant water, and the water there was still icy!!

Otherwise go slow cause of the blind corners & possible high rate of SPEEEEED! :) Man, it was sure fun today due to the past rains. No loose dirt, just moist, smooth, tire gripping single track! Even the ruts held the tread cause the conditions were so perfect! We rode it at like 2:30 in the afternoon on a Thursday! Not one hiker! My tires (Hutchisons) felt like they were on rails! No So.Cal. loose gravel-dirt this time! Just a smooth tire gripping surface! IT WAS PERFECT CONDITIONS! Go ride this trail but please don't skid, cause the switchbacks are plenty & step all doable, without skidding! I know & if anyone needs a lesson I can show ya! :) We don't need this great riding area shut down! - Trail UpdateTowsley-First time on this trail. Props to the guys at Marzocchi for giving me directions to this trail. Had minor repair done to my Z-1 and off course I wanted to go for a quick ride. Since I didnt bring my water pack, the guys at Marzocchi told me to go to Towsley since its a pretty short ride. They even gave me couple of water bottles filled w/cold water. Right on!!! Nice climb to the top. Switchbacks were pretty tight although since this was my first time here I didnt see some of them creep up. The singletrack coming down was pretty good, and again some of the switchbacks came up unexpectedly. After the clearing towards the end, there was another singletrack that was basicaly a straight run. Pretty cool...good ride if you want to do something quick and less than one hour. Again thanks to Russ and Keith @ Marzocchi!!!

- Trail UpdateHack-Rode this on Saturday 8-11-01. Trail in great shape. This is probably the best ride in the area. Several steep climbs, fast single-track down. Technical stuff in the Narrows. Lots of fun. I ride the shorter Canyon View Loop Trail and then do the Towsley View Loop counter-clockwise. It's a nice, pretty difficult 7.5 mile ride. Watch for hikers and oil. Several places natural oil runs across the single track. Bunny hop it. Don't get it on your wheelset (especially discs). Makes a mess.

- Trail UpdateExecutive Quick Tae Bo Workout!-I ride this trail at least once or twice a week. I've pretty much ridden all the trails in Sta. Clarita, and continue to explore every weekend but I always reserve a ride here every week. It's perfect for a quick "sneak before work" ride on weekdays early in the morning or "sneak out of work 45 minutes before it gets dark" ride. It's only 5 miles long but you get everything you need like a tae bo 8 minute workout. I can finally ride the whole thing without stopping so it is doable! It is more rideable counter clockwise. If anyone needs a guide to this trail, don't hesitate to email me. I've introduced so many people to this trail and so far, it's been challenging to seasoned riders and shocking to others.

- Trail UpdateGrand Slam (part 1)-Stick & move, stick & move, like Sugar Ray Leonard. That was the theme for this weekend as I was heading up to Bakersfield for a birthday party and would be getting a taste of the nearby riding. 4 rides planned in 2 days and Towsley was first to go down.
Parked at the front gate and headed back on the main road to hit this loop in the counter-clockwise direction. Easy riding all the way back, the trail gets skinnier as you proceed. The rock walls at the back of the canyon are truly amazing, and the smell of the oil ponds dominates. A couple moderate creek crossings keep you interested as the canyon walls get even tighter.
Then things open up a bit and you hit the swithbacked climb. Up and back the grade gets fairly steep around a few of the turns. Once near the top you'll come to some extremely steep grades. Took a breather and enjoyed the views before gagging up a lung climbing up the dirt faces. The first one was the hardest but I somehow managed not to lose traction and continued on.
The descent down the other side was fast and furious. Bermed turns, switchbacks, rock jumps, you name it, the only bummer was how fast I was back at my car. This place is small yet suitable for all levels. Take the kids around the back on the flat stuff, or do laps on those hard climbs for a workout. I also see on the map there is a connector to Pico canyon which would lenghten your ride considerably. If you like ancient rock formations this is your place.
Good luck to you.

The rest of the trail is great. I rode about 3 days after the rain stopped so the dirt was hard packed and very ridable. have a great ride!

Ride both directions to make an 11 mile ride. Each way

test your abilities but overall the trails are in good

- Trail UpdateHeckler-I've tried every which way out of the canyon to reach Oat Mtn. and other places, but each little road just dead ends at an old oil drilling site or becomes too steep to continue--I mean totally unrideable. I rode there many, many times and found no way out except for the marked singletrack that is the upper, or larger loop in Towsley Cyn. However, if you don't enter Towsley Cyn. and instead continue south on Calgrove, or what is called the Old Road, take the dirt road where you see the "Santa Clarita Woodlands" sign and head up the dirt road to East Canyon. Nice climb up to a gate, beautiful view. You could get to Oat Mtn. probably from here, but it becomes private property and there's a really grouchy dude in a white pickup that will tell you in not so kind words to get the hell off the property. Good luck if you can sneak by, though. It is really beautiful on the top of this mountain and it's a good, steep workout to get to the gate.

Anyway, I found a nice oil seep (off the trail a bit)and stuck a 6 foot stick in there to see how deep it was and the stick did not reach the bottom....so that hole is deep! Dont get to close to it....cause if you fall in...bye bye to you for ever. This trail is nice....but Oat Mountain is tempting you the whole way. -Tony

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon-Rode the trail counter-clockwise today. Like it better clockwise. Trail is completely overgrown in some sections. In desperate need of clearing. Still fun though.

- Trail UpdateTowsley / Wiley Canyon-BE CAREFUL !!!!!!!!! Riding on a crowded day can be hazardous to your body. Remember this is a LOOP and you can ride this trail, clockwise OR counter clockwise. Beware of riders (or hikers) going the opposite way of yourself.
Rode lately on a Monday, (which usually should be empty) and still ran into two Mtn Bikers and one hiker.
Also, leave the canines at home for this one. Not only do they require a leash in the park, but I saw 2 snakes and although I didn't stop, they looked as though they were small sidewinders, and I know dogs find those interesting.
The trail is in good shape, getting a bit overgrown in a few areas. A very technical ride, going both up and down. I prefer the counter-clockwise loop, because I can climb the switchbacks and then fly down the other side. When doing trail clockwise your downhill speed can be severly limited by the switchbacks and the narrow trail. GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!

- Trail UpdateTowsley-Trail conditions are excellent right now. Thanks Roger and others for all the hard work you put into trail maintenance. Some of the switchbacks get a little hairy, but the climb is okay as long as you ride the trail counter-clockwise (starting from the canyon). Watch your speed on the downhill and keep an eye out for hikers. Everyone is really nice, so say hi to the locals.

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon-Rode the big loop clockwise. The sections of the trail low in the canyons are a bit messed up but passable. The upper sections are in surprisingly good shape considering last weeks big rain. There is one Oak tree that has fallen across the trail near the top that is easily circumnavigated. Very picturesque this time of the year with the green grass and the streams running!

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon-Beautiful trail through steep narrows to mountain tops. Go backwards from the trail markers. It is too steep to ride if you go the other way. Many switch backs. On the way down towards Wiley Canyon there is one deceiving turn. WATCH your speed. Go to fast and your airborne into a tree. You will know it when you get there. You can make a longer ride out of it by going over the "Canyon View Loop Trail". I haven't seen horse riders yet on this one.

- Trail UpdateWent up the dirt raod from the gate at the bottom of the entrance to Wiley Canyon. Planned to do the loop, but due to much complaining from my 16 year old son in the 90 degree heat, we turned around at what must have been close to the top, just past trail marker #8. Down was great, except for some loose dirt at the steep section between #4 & #5 for a few hundred feet. Very well marked trail if you get the map at the park. We put 4.8 miles on the odometer. Next time I go alone. Mountain lions or not!

- Trail UpdateRJF-Thanks to Mountain Bike magazine naming this one of the top 50 trails in california...the Wiley Canyon singletrack loop as now THRASHED!...The trail is in need of some serious repair..and the effects of people skidding thru the switchbacks is tearing the trail to pieces...Thanks Mb Mag..our only hope is a VERY wet winter..to keep away the masses.

- Trail UpdateGreat ride. We took the fireroad in and looped back on the single track to Wiley Canyon, then the fireroad back to the parking lot.
The Towsley Canyon fireroad leaves from the parking lot in the same direction you road in, past a gate. There are trail markers. The singletrack loop is between markers 11 and 12. These are NOT mile markers, just significant places along the trail. Take the fireroad from the parking lot about 2+ miles. You've gone to far if you see a sign Private Property. Going in the single track is on the left.
The single track is steep (in places) with countless switch backs that take some work, made some, not some others.... about 1 more mile until the crest. Then about 3 miles of really good singletrack. Nice views, a few real difficult sections, good ride.
Singletrack ends at a fireroad. Nice fast descent down fireroad, watch for big holes... About a mile or so down there is a singletrack loop back up the hill to the parking lot. Lots of work and pretty technical. Advanced riders won't have a problem, intermediate like me takes some work...
We went to the crest of the singletrack, then went back down to the fireroad where we started. The fireroad ends at the entrance where you drove in. Head back up the road to the parking lot.
We met riders going both directions. I likes Towsley Canyon first, this was shorter to the top, more downhill singletrack.
Should have more updates soon. This trail was featured in Mountain Bike magazine this month, under California's 50 best trails. This was our first time, and every one else we saw had read about the trail in the magazine. Not too many people, but hot....it is almost August.
Good trail, lots of fun. Many different options, we could go back several more times to try other trails we didn't take this time.
Check out the maps before you leave.

- Trail UpdateWiley And Towsley Canyon Loop-Just got back from ridin this area . Very nice singletrack here. Trails are very hardpack, with just a little bit of sluff in the tight switchback area's( just makes it more challenging).I'd recommend riding the long loop single track from deep in Towsley Canyon to Wiley Canyon, rather than the other way. The ride is much more challenging that way, with tighter switchbacks, more technical riding, and the added bonus of SHADE..Ive done both loops in this area, the long and the short one, and started off the ride by riding the fireroad into Towsley 5.3miles then doubling back to the singletrack trail head(anyone know how far this fire raod goes? If anyone has any info on any more trails in this park,or any good single track PERIOD, E-Mail me.I'll trade ya for a good solid wicked singleteack that i know of :-) Good ridin Ps. Steve Martin, which hill are u talking about specifically?

- Trail UpdateTowsley Canyon-There are several fire roads and single tracks in Towsley Canyon with more on the way. Most of the trials are only 3 or 4 miles but you can link several of the trails together to make this a good ride.
My favorite loop starts at the parking lot. Ride about 1/4 mile up the dirt road to another road on the left with a gate across it. Head up this road (Wiley Canyon) about 1 1/2 mile till you come to a steep single track to the right. (Some day I'm going to make it to the top of this without stopping.) After you make it to the top of this steep section the trail gets easier. Continue uphill for about another 1 1/2 miles.(While at the top of the hill you can look north and see the water in Castaic Lake.)
Its mostly downhill from here with some tight switchbacks, to a fire road. Continue down the fire road through 1 water crossing and out of the canyon, about 2 miles.
There is another single track that starts just past Ranger Station on the right. This is about 2 miles long and is only recommended for advanced and expert riders.
This can be a beginner ride also. Just stay on the fire roads and explore. Don't ride this area within 48 hour of rain!
