    • Trail UpdateDam Gates Opening!-The current issue of Scripps Ranch Civic Association Newsletter reported that the gates on the dam will open up after almost six years. Local councilmember Brian Maienschein has been working on this for a long time and it looks like it will finally happen, hopefully on July 1.

This is great news for all those who enjoy the biking, skating, jogging and strolling at the lake. The road presents no challenges to anyone on a mt. bike(completely flat, paved five mile loop) but there are a number of trails above the road which intersect it at various spots and can provide some interesting short opportunities to work on technical skills. Not exactly "epic" rides but an easily accesssible area for just blowing off steam after work on a nice summer evening. Just be courteous to all the other users and the occassional rattle snake that likes to doze on the single track (I've encountered that twice) out here.

    • Trail UpdateFitness Ride, Out-n-Back-Miramar Lake remains a good place to get some fitness time on your bike/skates/shoes/stroller, but is not a place to go if you actually want to go fast (as opposed to looking like you're fast), because there are a lot of people on the paved trail and not all understand about holding their line when a rad dude comes up at speed.

Since the September 11 stuff, the route over the top of the dam has been closed, and the 5-mile loop is now a 9-mile out-n-back. As of Feb 10, 2002, the mellow singletrack trail below the paved trail is open, rideable and with only a few mudspots. The upper trails are dry, but you'll have to deal with houses and closure signs.

Bring a picnic lunch, a fishing pole (license might be a swift idea, too) and your bikes. Miramar is perfect for that, and it's your responsibility to teach your kids not to laugh at the guys on full suspension bikes, DH helmets and pads on the paved trail.

    • Trail UpdateRound And Round-Trails below the paved road is getting a bit overgrown towards the north side of the lake. The trails above the lake are in excellent condition. I like this lake because it has a little of everything, but I would not recommend the upper trails to beginners, though not too technical, they can be a bit tricky. i usually take the lakeshore single track going counter clockwise, then proceed to hit all the hilly singletrack clockwise ending with that fun descent from the ridgeline. It's a good place to build endurance and skill.

    • Trail UpdateI have recently changed my idea about this trail. It is a very good place to build up skills. Granite if this is your first or second real ride stay on the concrete. Otherwise, the third or fourth ride becomes alot easier. But it builds massive skills. Try it both ways.

    • Trail UpdateI am a begginer but this stuff is hard. There are many trails above and below the paved course which circle the lake clockwise. The upper trails are not the tame at heart. I wiped out several times the first time trying to negotiate the turning and rough descents. This is a serious trail which should not be attempted by those starting out. There are a few rattle snake but not many. The lower trail are alot smoother and can go alot faster. The whole loop is over five miles. The trails are very small single track. GOOD LUCK...you'll need it!

    • Trail UpdateLake Circuit-Off-trail riding is discouraged by Park Rangers. Ridge line dominated by private homes. Paved path is almost flat, and except for many curves, quite an easy ride. Fun to watch the ducks and geese, and windsurfers when there's a breeze. There are several blind curves. When cars are allowed on - weekends - this adds hazard and annoyance. Trail is full road width, permitting two-way traffic over almost the whole length. Trail is quite crowded on weekends.

    • Trail UpdateMiramar Lake-There is a paved path around the lake and lots of trails that branch off of the path. Lots of up and down hills.Rocks can be a little tricky. On Weekends they allow cars on the paved path which is a little annoying. Lots of fun.
