Southern California Trails

  • Mills Avenue - #MillsAvenue

Socal - Los Angeles County - Claremont NickNames: #MillsAvenue

The Trailhead is at the top of Mills Ave. in Claremont, California. Mills is just east of Indian Hill Blvd. Use Indian Hill off-ramp from the I10 Freeway. The area at the top of Mills has changed to become officially the "Claremont Hills Wilderness Park". Riders no longer need to get permission from the colleges to ride there. The park is open daily from dawn 'till dusk, and there is a porta-potty and a trail map at the bottom. Thomas Guide page 571 E4

    • Trail UpdateClosed On 12-24 Til ??-Stopped by for my morning loop, roped off, I suppose for trail maintenance recovering after the downpours :/ Not sure when it will reopen. Instead motored up Mountain to catch trailhead from the top. Gravity riders were being shuttled up to the same area.

Options are Marshall Cyn or Webb Cyn. Ride on...

    • Trail UpdateTK Rider Back In The Hizzy-Back from a busted arm and wrist. The trail is still closed intermittently form Mills. I rode this morning from bottom of Marshall Canyon. Boy is Marshall screwed up at the bottom before the golf course. Several hiking sections. Got better higher up. Rode over the ridge and down Cobal. ROad is bumpy and rutted but otherwise fast and tacky. Beware of the big stream cut near the bottom. It's a bike swallower. Hard to see and hard to bunny hop! Rode back up Burbank Cyn and back down Marshall via the jump trail (way rutted). Took the pavement back to truck at Marshall Canyon Golf Course to avoid the hiking at the bottom.

    • Trail UpdateNo Ruts Here...-This trail has been graded enough times that it rivals asphalt paving in some areas. The 6.4 mile loop is a nice training run If you're short on time. Watch out for ESL folks spread shoulder to shoulder on the DH trail if you're there later than 730 AM any given day, as they often scatter in the direction you're telling them you intend to go...

    • Trail UpdateWEB CYN-I was there again on Sunday a little wet but that is the way I like it.
There is 3 ways to go down just after the short climb
we did two of them. the one to the far right is a little overgrown but worth the trip. the center one
      is fast fast fast downhill!!!!!!!.
the one to the left is the one very one knows.
try out the jumps at the drop. there is something for everyone.
around the jump area there is a cool new trail with
      two small logs.

    • Trail UpdateMills Is Closed-Tried to ride Mills Sunday morning 7am. The chain link gate was locked and a ranger turned me around. But not to fear. We all just headed over to Wheeler and rode Marshal up to the burn area. The Witch is dead! It looks pretty bad up there but I think from the ashes, with time, will be better trails and more challenging single track then before. Lets be smart and we can make it happen.

    • Trail UpdateStill Good-I ride this trail/fireroad at least three times a week, but as of late due to the recent rains and christmas shopping and a million other freekin things the ride time has been minimal.Today went for 3 loops as it is only 5 miles around. The rain has helped to add some character to the trail, and the lose stuff is all but gone. There is a couple plces where you'll tend to pick up a little mud.But this place has to be the best place around for shedding water. After all that rain yesterday and by tomarrow you should be able to ride without collecting any mud. They're continuosly grading the trail so there is nothing to worry about as far as destroying the trail.Sure wish they'd let it go back to nature. It's a nice workout though as it is.Great views and a lot of options. If you want to make a more strenous ride out of it you can take Miller Canyon or just cut over at the gate and head down to Marshall Canyon on the switchbacks, they're a hoot.Riding at night here is really cold though.Even after getting to the top I'm still cold. You can feel the wind coming down off of Mt. Blady and it's plenty cold.I've seen a lot of deer here lately, must be deer season.

    • Trail UpdateWebb Alternates?-Webb downhill is great, finally cleaned the hill without clipping out, 4 foot drop near the bottom looks a lot farther when you're on top. I can't believe we can ride this on a hardtail! Someone about once a month clears out some of the overgrown bushes near the top, which is much appreciated since it still has that hidden mystique. Anyone know of any other good singletrack downhills in the area similar in technicality to webb? An e-mail would be appreciated.

    • Trail UpdateBurbank To Marshall To Thompson-I used to live in the area would ride this great loop.
I would park in the gravel parking lot located at the very top of Indian hill Ave (take that exit off I10).

Get on yer bike and turn left on to the thompson creek bike path (asphalt). Ride the bike path to the trail head at the top of mills. You will know you are there becuz the bike trail ends at the mills parking lot.
Enter the wilderness park (fireroad) and go left up Burbank canyon. 1.5 miles later hang a sharp right and keep going up (don't worry you're amost done). You will then go down short hill. You have some opitions coming up.
There are three single tracks put will dump you into Marshall canyon proper. I am going to give directions to my favorite.
A short ways after the short downhill the fireroad splits. Go left past the private property sign. The fire road is considered public use, but you must stay on it. You will go up a little then down alot! at the bottom you will see trail that goes right. DO NOT TAKE THIS TRAIL. It will put you in to Marshall Canyon but the next turn of is way funner!!
Power up the next short hill. You will see another trail of to your right. This is the one you want.
The water diversion bumps make sweet jumps! Beaware there are a few swicthbacks that can sneak up on you and the trail is occasionally use by horses.

Enjoy the FAST decent! Take Marshall canyon all the way down to where it ends at the top of Emerald Ave. Back to street riding. Turn left onto the street and follow it around until you come to Basline. Turn left on Baseline. Take Baseline past the 's' curve and down the hill. at the bottom of the hill turn left back on to the thompson creek trail. Take the trail back to you car.
...Or do the loop again. I rode this 3 times back to back... Sweeeeet!!!!

    • Trail UpdateCWP To Webb Canyon Singletrack-For those of you that appreciate this ride and would like to see it remain open, contact the Claremont Wildlands Conservancy and ask how you can help to preserve Johnson's Pasture. Johnson's Pasture is the low rolling area you ride through to connect burbank to the single track. This area is at risk of being developed. That means loss of trails. The Claremont Wildlands Conservancy is the only group of concerned mtn. bikers, hikers and open space enthusiasts making an effort to preserve this area. Get involved or don't bitch about trail access. Also, make sure you are showing some respect for all who use these trails. There is strength in numbers on this issue.

Now, care to explain yourself? Is it some kind of Indian burial ground? A new-age religious center? A nuclear waste dump? Is it actually PRIVATE PROPERTY???

I'll never ride there - it's not in my neighborhood - but I'd like to know if I stand a chance of getting a picture of a Chupa Cabra or something if I go there.

    • Trail UpdateWebb Canyon Loop-Follow the directions above and park at the wilderness park parking lot. Get on your ride, and start riding north on the fireroad. Make your first left, which is Burbank Fireroad (straight is Cobal Fireroad). Keep climbing Burbank for awhile, and you will eventually get to a ‘T’ in the road. Take the left side (the right fork leads, eventually, to Cobal), and climb some more. After here, it is all right turns at the subsequent forks, if memory serves correctly. However, if I am wrong and you wind up taking a wrong turn, you will wind up at a dead end or a paved road and will be forced to climb back up. No big deal. There is some nice singletrack side action off the fireroad, so don’t be afraid to exlplore a bit. Eventually you will reach a powerline that is immediately to the left of the fireroad. If you look to the left of the powerline there is a snaking singletrack that heads down. This is the opening to Webb trail- lots of fun, steep ST with a few 6’ terraces towards the bottom that will sneak up and you and kill you if you aren’t careful (seriously, watch out for these... my friend who wins expert-class XC races flew off one of these and wound up breaking his brand-spankin’ new helmet in 6 places). The ST will give way to a fireroad, and make a left. Follow this back to Thompson Creek trail (this is a paved bike path that travels aside a creek for a few miles) and make another left, following this back to your car. Do this loop 3-4 times, or until you can’t feel your legs anymore. My only complaint about Webb trail is the length. It is a fun descent that should be managable by any upper-intermediate to advanced rider.

As far as the spooky folklore about this place, don't believe the hype. This is great mountain biking... just avoid it on a hot, smoggy day (ie. August). And stop by Bud's bike shop in town for a map, maybe even buy something. Too few small bike shops around these days. Very good people there.

      Be the ball, people.

    • Trail UpdateClaremont Wilderness Park-I rode this area Friday afternoon 10-29-99. It was dry and dusty with plenty of fresh dog and horse droppings. There are no signs about the park being closed to mountain biking. I contacted the City of Claremont on Monday AM 11-1-99 in regards to the prior posting. They informed me that any information stating that the park is closed to biking is completely incorrect. Any Park Rangers that are telling anyone this should be reported to the city Parks Department.

    • Trail UpdateHarriet-The trail is now closed permanently to bikes. The Ranger said it was due to people riding it while it was temporarily closed. Thanks a lot. Now only dog walkers and horse riders can use it.

    • Trail UpdateMike-The trail has recently been graded. Most of the ruts have been elimated, especially the big ones on cobalt. However, there are many soft areas and lots of loose rocks. I rode the trail three times over the long weekend. If you ride late morning to late afternoon expect to encounter many hikers with their dogs off-leash. The trail now has posted areas due to rider creating new trails which could lead to the traiks being closed to us.

    • Trail UpdateMills Loop-Thanks to the human gophers that cut a single track in the Mills Loop area, there is a group of people attempting to exclude Mtn Biking from the Mills Loop. Whoever is responsible for cutting the single tracks into the hillside should be forced to ride Sunset top to bottom without a saddle. We need to watch our speed on the downhills and be super polite when overtaking hikers. These people are bent out of shape and don't want us around.

Mills is a great trail, lets keep it that way!!!!

    • Trail UpdateJimbeau-Yesterday (5-4-99) the conditions were excellent -- mega traction and very little mud. Until you get to the Marshall Canyon gate, it's 100% fireroad....far from advanced riding. You will be climbing for about 4 miles. This is another area to avoid during and immediately after a rain. PLEASE be cautious....many hikers and equestrirans use this area. Let's not force "them" to shut us out.

    • Trail UpdateDtrek-I am from Rancho Cucamonga, we ride marchall canyon frequently. Funnest place to ride yet. Just rode it Sunday 4-25-99 it was awesome. Muddy conditions. Alot of sliding around, alittle heavier on the climb because of the mud but still one hell of a ride. Might be even more muddy since we got some heavy showers yesterday 428/99. So fellow mountain bikers enjoy and be safe.

    • Trail UpdateWilderness Park Trailhead Rides-Being a Claremont native, I ride here 3x per week. Great variety and great views. Ride through the gate, past the port-a-potty on your right and then down and up crossing a stream to reach the "Y" and here's where your options begins. I'll give you three:
      1) The Loop (Novice-Intermediate): Turn left and go up Burbank Canyon. It is tougher at first, but an easier uphill than Cobal whereas Cobal is the easier downhill to navigate. Two trail decisions: a) take the sharp curve uphill to the right instead of going left. b) at the top, go straight instead of veering left and sharply uphill. Several great viewpoints -- one towards LA/Pasadena and one towards Catalina/Ocean. When you get to the gate on your left, you only have one more uphill to go and then it's down Cobal.
Around 45-50 minutes riding time for intermediate and 30-35 for advanced. Note: Be careful of hikers when going downhill, especially those who like to walk hand-in-hand up the middle of the trail (usually early am or sunset). :)

      2) Loop/Marshall Canyon/Loop(Intermediate-Advanced): Go left at the "Y" and up Burbank as above, but at the gate turn left, go past the gate and head downhill on the Marshall Canyon trail. Definitely bring a map your first time as there are too many trail splits for me to mention here. However, lots of challenging single track options, and be careful, you never know when they'll be newly graded and therefore soft. Turn around, come back up past the gate and turn left to finish the rest of the Loop.
Depending on where you turn around on Marshall Canyon, 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours riding time for intermediate and 1 1/4 to 2 hours for advanced.
Note: Be careful of and respectful of horse riders in the Marshall Canyon trail or we might get banned in the future.

      3) POTATOE (Advanced): Nothing too technical here, just a lot of brutal hills; great training for the Advanced rider. Start by going straight at the "Y" up Cobal Canyon road. About a 1 to 1/2 miles up, you'll see a major split. Instead of following the loop up to the left, go straight. After this short, steep uphill, you'll have some easy riding for 1/2 a mile. But don't get used to it for that is followed with about a 1 to 1 1/2 miles of consistant uphill (be sure to stay to the left at the first split you see and then to the right and sharply uphill at the "Saddle"). Then, when you come around a left bend and see the split, drop into 1st, veer right and power up "the Saddle". If you thought that was tough, take a long break. After a short, steep downhill (and be careful, the dirt is very loose hill, you will be going up POTATOE and her "Seven Sisters". The "Seven Sisters" are seven killer 70 yard uphills with about a five yard flat area before each one. THEN, the last uphill is the steepest of all and has a very loose, rocky area through which I only make it about 1/2 the time. The challenge for the advanced rider here is to ride all the way up without stopping and make it through that last uphill. The top is very rewarding; however. On the best days, you can just make out Catalina! Warning: never do this ride in the middle of the day or probably anytime it is over 80 degrees.
