    • East End Ride-The Catalina Island Conservancy opened the East end of the Island (Renton Mine Road-Divide Road to the Summit) in October 2004. This new area provides two major routes out of Avalon. One ride on pavement towards the airport and Two Harbors and one East End Ride that goes around the entire ridgeline from the east end of Avalon Canyon to the West end of Avalon Canyon (top of the steep paved road).

This ride can be accessed from Mt Ada Rd. either from Pebbly Beach or Avalon. The initial section leads to Renton Mine, stay right at the intersection of Renton Mine Rd and the East End Divide Road. This is about the half-way point of the climb. Follow the road to the top of the climb (East Peak +-1,600 feet ele.), continue along the ridge line and take in the spectacular views of the channel (and mainland) and the Pacific Ocean, out to San Clemente Island. The ride is now downhill until the intersection of Wrigley Memorial Gardens Road (no bike are currently allowed on this road but that may change soon!). From this intersection to the paved road (Summit Road) is a pretty good climb for about 20 minutes. Once you reach the paved road you can either go left towards the Airport and the west end of the island or right down the paved road. Be sure to check with the Conservancy before you take any ride, our record rains this winter have affected many of the roads on the island.

    • Trail UpdateAvalon To 2 Harbors...all Of It-The climb out of Avalon to the airport is what warms ya up!!! I
have taken my bike to Catalina several years during the Oct
JAZZTRAXX Jazz Fest. We ride from Avalon to 2 harbors,
detouring thru the canyons to the Airport. That is about 15 or
so miles, then we ride into 2 harbors. By the time I finish the
total ride, about 32 miles, I'm overwith!! Then we catch the
boat back to Avalon. The total elevation gain has got to be
well over 3000 feet between the UPS and downs during the
course of this ride. YES, not technical at all, but fabulous
views, complete (well except for the Bofo's) solitude and fresh
air indeed. Then back to El Gallion the restaurant in Avalon for
a pig out! It is worth doing once for sure, but DON'T skip the
ride from Avalon to Airport, taking the dirt road thru the
valley. There is an Eagle in a cage that is real neat to see!

    • Trail UpdateAirport To Two Harbors-I took the ferry over solo one Sunday to check out the riding. I took a shuttle bus up to the airport from Avalon. I recommend this as it's a very steep, windy, paved road that will kick your a$$ before you've even hit the dirt. Not fun.

The dirt road was 16-17 mi. to Two Harbors, according to my computer. Same distance back, plus you can fly down the paved roads back into Avalon. A scenic ride, but not very challenging. Bikes are NOT allowed off the dirt road. Vehicles also will be driving on this road with you. Two Harbors is good for a rest & re-fuel. The high point for me was riding within 10-20 yds of huge buffalo staring at me with nothing between us. "Easy there big fella..."

I probably wouldn't do this again, unless it was with a group and we just wanted to do some miles, take it easy and enjoy the views of the ocean.

    • Trail UpdateAirport Elv.-I have yet to ride here, but the airport is at 1632' above msl. So it is really a 1600' gain. Not a big difference. I'm just picky....
