- Trail UpdateHeavily Overgrown...-Rode up to the ruins of this house on Sunday, along with Zippy MacPhee and Byondo. It was a planned detour during our ride up Cobal Canyon and down through Marshall Canyon. Forgot how much of an extra climb it is - the house elevation is actually just a bit higher than the high point of Cobal.
The trail from the helipad area up to the house is severely overgrown now. The first little section was a definite hike-a-bike, but the rest is mostly ridable. You'll be going over and through a lot of bushes. Lots of nasty thorns to scrape you as you go by - clearly part of the witch's defenses.
We left a geocache up there for people to find (sorry if that offends you) - just go to geocaching.com and search on the map and you'll get the details.
For those who are having trouble finding the right trail, here is a map of the route from the Stephens Ranch Rd parking lot: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3839797

- Trail UpdateNo More Blair-I followed this trail up only to find a foundation =( I guess it was part of the fires that happened up here not to long ago. Most of the house looked like it went up in flames and was then demolished....Sad!! I was looking forward to finding a completely abandoned house.

- Trail UpdateThe Witch-I was up there last Saturday in the middle of the heat,The trail is in good cond and has not been graded. I don't think they will grade it.
About 1/2 down there is a new single track on the left side that go down the ridge, it needs a little work then it will be perfect.
The Witch was find but I paid my dues on the way up, Prison camp was steep and hot, it sucked everything out of me.
The Witch wins again!

- Trail UpdateHidden Trail-They graded the dirt road by the helispot so it makes it hard to spot the trail because of a mound of dirt. There is a singletrack due north from the helispot that goes up and eastward and is marked with a flag (don't know where that goes). The ST that we took was actually slightly NorthWest of the helispot. There's alot of mustard plants overgrowing the last mile of trail. Bees were numerous. Watch out for the massive crack in the trail (due to storm runoff) just above the huge concrete block in the ground.
The downhill is fast and fun. The overgrowth can be annoying in shorts, so wear pants (also good as there are many sharp rocks).
The house was cool, but from what I understand, its burned in the past few years. We figured they abandoned the home due to land instability and/or mudslide(s). As we can find no road leading to the house, we feel safe in our assumption. Anyone know for sure?

- Trail UpdateThe Witch-In spite of the injury, I had a great time! I'll be back!
Mr Bonk took us to the Blair Witch house last Sunday. A bit of a climb, but no too bad, considering the great view when you reach the house. We poked around for a while through the rubble (nothing left but the chimney, after the Curve fire is Sept '02. As we headed back to the bikes, I tried to convince Sam that his new custom-built Intense Tracer was mine (he wasn;t buying it! Too bad....what an awesome ride!). Maybe that's what jinxed me. The ride down from the house to the equestrian center was fast and easy. Then we took the stream crossings trail, which was a little washed out, but great fun none the less. Now I'm back in familiar territory, probably ridden this stretch 50 times. Just past the tunnel, I tried to launch off of a rock. The launch was great.....the landing? Not so hot. THUD! OTB and time for a dirt nap! My hand is feeling much better now that I picked out the bone fragment. I don't need no stinkin' doctor! Holding a fork is an accomplishment, but I can actually do it today, 60 hours later. I'll try to post a picture.

- Trail UpdateTHE WITCH-Rode up there Sunday with Lloyd, Victor, Sam, and Mike. The other ridder had too go home and paint the house.[you faker] the trail has changed a lot since the rain, there is lots of growth in the area and since the house has burned there is little or no traffic up there. this makes a great fast downhill !!!!!!
Lloyd was on my tail all the way down. Victor left his brains at the shop so he was taking it easy. Sam was braking in the new ride. [no scraches yet]
Mike was a diffrent story [I think Mike had vibes from the house]on the way down Mike hit the rock just below the tunnel, he pinched flated on over the bars he goes. he must have punched the ground with his right hand hard. I have never seen a hand swell up that fast. maybe he will post photos?

- Trail UpdateTHE WITCH-I was up there today, She does not want anyone near the house.
I started off late Shocktower was sick so I was on my own. After about 100 yds I noticed my rear tire was low but enough air to keep going. Have way up Burbank chain snag [all most over the bars]then down Free fall[ I have done this so many times I did not lower my seat] big mistake [I will need the night off dear!]
down the 3 bitches no real problems, then down the new single track [hard packed big ruts] no fun really
then the detour at the bottom of the switch backs
it is packed now and a trail being worked in [in a few weeks this will be fun] through Bear Junction up to the Grand Cyn [the old creek trail] up up up to the road then out and up up up again and over to The Witch. droped down in to the trail [it is over grown] then the sand at the bottom. the climb up was very diffrent this time after the rains there is a few new canyons [and I do mean canyons]and everything looked diffrent [not just the fire and the rain?]went by the Clance trail it has weeds 3 feet tall. when I reached the Y the trail looked like it had been plowed but no tractor tracks around? up that trail aways there is a new canyon it is passable but you will walk it, over to were the garage use to be
down the walk way [ I had this feeling that I was not welcome ] the trail was in bad shape and everything was dead no new growth? then I had to stop!!!!
there is a BIG CANYON were the old bridge was! I just sat there looking at everything for a few minutes, thinking of the way it use to be.
On the way down I went on the flying W trail [major growth and not rideable] then the steep single track that only Shocktower and I would do samething overgrown. I just cruzed down the cement block is exposed more then ever [almost over the bars again] then I almost missed the turn and I was going slow [ I know that is hard to beleive]once back in the canyon everything was back to normal I past Pain freak [he was going the other direction] with the group from Coates. I even made it all the way up the middle trail [AKA upper shearwood forest] then up past the gate [AKA yellow gate years ago it was yellow]then down Colbalt.
Great day for a ride.

I like the trail except the horse crap really kind of blew it. We started off at about 8:00 PM so it was pretty exciting. We had our lights and stuff... we were kind of skeptical at parking at the dirl lot (it said it was for equestrian area or sumthin) but we parked there and we saw the LA County multi-purpose sign. It was a FUNNN trail, come down if you have time... ill be going this weekend again. SOMEONE, CLEAN THE HORSE CRAP... - Trail UpdateGirls Love Dirt-Cynthia, Liz and I rode up to the house on Saturday afternoon. A bit of an interesting start with the three of us getting "attention" from the boys in the probation camp. The directions were a bit confusing here and there so we took a couple of wrong turns which we had to backtrack. We made it up to the house and thought the little girl's dress hanging from the upstairs window was a bit creepy. We took the tour through the house and we wished that it was in the same condition as it was described in earlier entries from a year ago. There were no chandeliers or blair witch symbols or a VW bug. We did find the piano (in the back house), but it was so vandalized you can't play it. We saw someone's wedding photo and saw some recent letters (?) tossed about. The upstairs was a bit spooky at first since the wind was blowing and the doors were moving. Then we found the basement and saw the old refrigerator. We opened the door and found a dead body...just kidding...You didn't think we'd be dumb enough to actually open it, did you? :) It's a bit sad to think that this house must have been rather beautiful at one time before people vandalized it. It was a bit hard to figure out where these other trails were that you guys take after getting to the house so this ended up being a short ride. As a side note, it's pretty funny when you take someone (Liz) up this trail and you don't let them know in advance that there's a spooky house to explore at the end of the house. Hey...did anyone else notice that if you look closely at the picture of the house, it looks like there is a person standing on the back patio?

What a night ride, on the way up there was two riders coming down through Marshall.
The weather was on the cool side but not too cold, with almost a full moon! Nice climb up, we enjoyed the view at the house!
Then we saw some lights that we could not explain that were down in the canyon.
On the way down Flyingdub heard what he thought sounded like water running? There was no water in that area of the canyon, then Andy seen the eyes in the bushes?
I believe the Blair Witch was watching!

- Trail UpdateC'mon, I can't be the only one riding this trail lately! Pete and I hooked up on Friday night (2-22-02) for a night ride, my first ever. Started at the bottom of Marshall Canyon and 15 minutes into the Canyon I broke my chain. Too much brute strength? (No you moron, learn how to shift!) Thanks, Pete, for the spare pin. After that we made good progress up to the fire road, left at the road that leads to the heliport. Continued west down the ST just past the heliport, right at the first "Y", right at the next "Y" and on up to the Witch!
I swear I saw a light in one of the windows (O.K. I was spooked!) After rapping for a few minutes there we continued up the road another 300 yards or so to the end. This is "THE" view. What a night! Back down the road & the short ST to the heliport, this time staying to the right, west of the fire camp, down to the graded parking lot, down that steepish ST to the junction, left and over to the roller coaster, down that and up to the water tanks. Continued on up the "Pasture" to the ST and Southwest down through the rest of Marshall Canyon. I'm hooked! Thanks again Pete for a great ride. I highly recommend this ride to all.

- Trail UpdateTook advantage of Presidents Day and tooled up Marshall Canyon from the bottom. A little moist today ,as a result of yesterdays showers, with a half dozen or so puddles in the trail. It's good to see that all the MTB'ers are avoiding these, 'wish I could say the same for the equestrians!
Anyway, headed west at the Fire Road at the top of Marshall and over to the Blair Witch. It's not as spookey in the daytime (night ride anyone?) Ventured up the road past the house just to see what was up there. Yippee! The "bad boys" at the Prison/Fire Camp have cleared the ridge back down to the heliport. Great downhill for those interested. I had to walk the portion about mid-way down 'cuz I'm "Sissy-Boy." To make it interesting, take a left down the first "cleared" trail and this empties you out of the canyon at the top of the heliport. Great traction down Marshall and out!

I was just above the house, this is the closest I have been in months!
The trail has been cleared and is easy to find, also there is NO sign!!!!!!
The house is trashed pretty bad,I would guess it is from the gangs that go up there [what do you think Chris?]
The weather was great not to hot and not to cool.
We started at Mills and went up Colbalt past the gate, down the three B's and the switch back, through Bear juction down Roller Coaster then over to Prision camp,up to the Blair Witch house then back down.
up the dirt road, we went up Upper Shearwood Forest [the middle trail] past the gate[use to be yellow years ago]then down Cobalt.

If it were in the city no body would pay much attention, but it's out of the way location is unique. I didn't notice any "Trail Closed" signs on the route I took. I also didn't enter the house or go beyond the out building that is pretty well trashed. I'm more curious as to its history. I will try to get some info on it. - Trail UpdateYeah!... What He Said!-Right on Mr. Bonk. Most equestrians dont have a problem with us so long as we are courteous to them and visa-versa. Although, There are just as many A-holio's on bikes as there are on horseback. Being an equestrian myself, I have been stormed by would-be velo-attackers in the area before, but forgave them "for they know not what they do". Question: Would he be pissed if I took a few of my friends on Morgan horses up the trail to the top? I think not. So, we have a double standard, NO?
I believe you are correct in that the county maintains the trail up to the house. This would lead me to believe that this were not private property and is an open trail. Last time I went to the house, I had'nt seen much change. A few things had been moved around. People who do visit the house though, should consider it a privilage and leave things where they found them. Theres not alot of places that we can ride where we can actually go see something. Oh! and by the way! we all know there's another way up to the house anyway!

- Trail UpdateBlair Witch House Trail-Wow! A little testy about a few mountain bikers riding on your land. Although it seems obvious that you really dont care about the place. If it was anything but an abandoned house, I could see the problem. To tell you the truth, if you do own that house it should be taken away from you anyway. I cant believe you would even mention the fire danger when the house and the surrounding land is just a fire waiting to happen. Perhaps you should be happy that someone(bikers, hikers, horseman) are up there keeping an eye out for fire. If this is the condition you keep your backyard as you call it, Id hate to see your house.

- Trail UpdateTHIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY-As the signs states, "Private Property-No Trespassing", is EXACTLY what that means. All the proper authorities have been notified of the problem of bikers trespassing on the property and with the extreme fire danger, they will be called! Posting on the web to "just go around the signs" will not be tolerated. All property west of the heliport and north of Stephens Ranch Road is PRIVATE. Going inside someones house even if is is vacate is criminal trespassing. I do not ride my horses in your backyard, so don't ride your bikes in mine

The piano is not so bad on its own but when you start to play it that's when things get spooky! You need to sit and have lunch at the dinner table to get the full affect of the house, oh and definatly go upstairs to the kids room with all the little shoes and clothes!!! - Trail UpdateBlair Witch Trail-What in wide world is this? A spooky adventure and a decent trail (short). This was my first time on this trail and I have a problem with the instructions. Everything was fairly detailed except for the first two, three Y's in the road. It starts with the first Y in the road, this is correct, but the second step of staying to the right and down the hill is confusing. You dont really have a choice there. The road to the left is so overgrown you miss the fact that you have made a right down the hill causing you to make a right at the third Y. I did make the the wrong turn but before I found my error I found the most intresting set of downhill trails (steep and with big air). The house is very freaky, people just dont leave that much sh*t behind. Does anyone know the story behind the it? O ya and the trespassing sign, Well lets just say that I never saw it. If anything, Its like a neighborhood whatch sign. Maybe the witch put it there.

The singletrack that we took from the helicopter
pad left us bushwacking through chaparral rather
than riding. It fit with the directions but was so
overgrown that it left us wondering if there isnt a
better way to go- while still avoiding private
property. Additionally, how much of the area is
actually private property? We were following Mr.
Bonks directions and on the dirt road when we ran
into an equestrian while on our way down. She
seemed pretty pissed that we were in the area
and said that if the owner caught us he would be
calling the cops. More info on the area would be
appreciated if availible. Keep an eye out for
equestrians and take care! Oh yeah, we crossed a

Once we got back to the main trail, we found the house trail. Nice climb! Pretty spooky when you first see the house. Once we were inside, it didn't seem too scary, but it was mysterious. If I had been alone, I definetly would have been scared! We saw the piano and all the dishes in the cupboards, but did not see any witchcraft signs. We did see alot of rat's nests! After we left the house, we went to our left at the last 'y' and rode to the top to see the view. Very beautiful! Well worth the ride!
