 Mendocino National Forest Questions
I would like to make a road trip from Sothern CA. to Mendocino National Forest to do some riding/exploring and to experience some solitude. I have a few questions and did some research already.

Does this sound about right..

From my googling, it has no Redwood trees but plenty of various Pine trees and Oaks. It harbors black bears and some elk in the North parts. It has a lake, Lake Pilsbury which is good for fishing but dont eat the fish because of high levels of Mercury.

It is below/attatched to Trinity National Forest, and it has 2 Wildlife Reserves (no riding).

Mendocino National Forest is a few miles above Clearlake, 50-65 miles North of Santa Rosa/Sonoma/Napa, 100 miles north of SF, 150 miles West of Tahoe, 200 miles South of the Oregon border and 50 miles East of the Pacific Ocean.

What can you tell me about Mendocino National Forest? How is the riding? On a website it said "The trails for bikes have ruts, roots, limbs, loose rocks, steep dropoffs, loosely maintained and hazzardous". Sounds great! ;)

Where do you suggest staying? What can you tell me about the town of "Nice, CA or any of the Clearlake towns?

Thanks...

If you're up near Clear Lake try Boggs Mountain State Demo Forest or try Jackson State Demo Forest near Ft. Bragg.

I used to live down there in Rancho Santa Margarita. I miss those trails like the San Juan and the Holly Jim. I Highly recomend Boggs Mnt St. Park which is right next to a little town called Cobb. Take the Hwy 175 of of the 29 in Middletown. On your way up, stop off in Santa Rosa and Ride Annadale St. Park. Annadale offers allot of technical trail riding with red rock and redwood forest. It is a popular place to ride allot like whitting Ranch is down there in OC. If you are looking for a place to stay, you can check out Cobb, Kelseyville, or Lakeport. If you are looking for a really nice place to stay, check out Konocti Harbor in Kelseyville which is right on Clear Lake. You can also stay in Ukiah and take the Hwy 20 East to where you want to go. I hope this helps. Bullets rule!

Sweet suggestions and thanks. You must be wondering how I replied so quickly..... ;)

I ended up staying in Lakeport, I drove through Kelseyville...

I worked my way up to Ukiah and back down to Santa Rosa, then to SF. then to SLO. Then, I moved to SLO.

Thanks for the info, I now have boggs as a riding destination. I have heard that boggs is a cool place to go by a few people now.

Rootbeer colored Bullits are not capable of riding the gnar...or maybe that's their owners...I get the two confused sometimes...please stick to mellow XC rides on the (also Rootbeer colored) Blur...you'll be happy you did when you spark up and hang out with some cows & look at the cool clouds or whatever it is you do up there in mellowsville...

Lag: "What? No, I did not fall on my hand and break it apart at woo-woosley."

Nurse: "Sir, you can not use cell phones in the ER, please, put it away and turn it off".

Snuggles: "lol" (cell phone is erupting with laughter)
