Motivs are absolutely excellent bikes. Their 24 hour tech support is outstanding (especially if you are participating in a 24 hour race!). The craftsmanship that goes into each one of this little machines is very similar to that found in the high end- over priced bikes. The same tubing used in Trek, Klein and even Kona is found in these motivs. Buy one and you will not regret it! - Re: motiv bicycles
This has to be a joke! I doubt vey seriously if motiv uses scandium, carbon fibre, or metal matrix Alu, in any of their toy bikes. That and for the price you supposedly decked out that Motiv with you could have bought a far superior frame with say LX or XT components. Posted by Rem.788 a Cross-Country on 06/28/02

Department store bikes are killing the bicycle industry. I own a bike shop and have worked on more wally world, k-mart, toys r us and target rigs than anything. these bikes are not made for anything but street riding. They even say so on the bike! If what people say here is true and I cannot see that it is, these bikes do not hold up for long doing the things they claim. I have NEVER seen one that does! Crazy is correct you cannot put high end shimaNO parts on dept. store rigs. Whay would anyone want too anyway? Just go buy a REAL bike and be done with it! They don't sell them in Bike shops for a reason. Go to your LBS and buy a bike that will last. You may spend more money to start out with but you are paying for quality, durability, and most importantly service. In the long run, a quality bike shop bike will cost you less. I bought three at Aldi's for $99 each. I love them. Anytime there's a bargain, you'll get the 'experts' to badmouth the deal, thinking that their 'wisdom' will impress you. Remember the tough little Yugos for $3995? Same 'experts' badmouthed them. Trouble is, none of the 'experts' ever owned a Yugo. I have, and still do. They run forever. Don't listen to the 'experts' who never actually own whatever they claim to be 'experts' about. Listen to me. Motivs are great. I own three. Get 'em while you can, and let the 'experts' pay too much for their overpriced iron.Speaking of: I bought a Peugeot UO-8 for $140 in 1974. Now, THAT'S overpriced schlock. Like the bike shop said: "Those in the know don't buy Peugeot." Posted by Hup234! a Weekend Warrior riding a 3 Motiv AL-9000s, 1 Peugeot UO-8, 1 '42 Elgin from Wisconsin on 06/25/01

- Re: motiv bicycles
I've been riding for a long time and the Motiv is a great bike for the price. Most bikes are made in a couple factories in Taiwan and branded for Motiv or whoever else. Anyone who puts down these bikes is just an elitist. Take it out and if you can break it, then go waste your money on some overpriced sled. - Re: motiv bicycles
I just purchased my Motiv at Aldi for $99. First I scoffed at it, with the options and quality welds and equipment, it is very much so a great bike for the money. I figure if it is junk it will break very soon, if that happens I bring it back or it will be under warranty. I had mine for (1) week on / off road and already have 280 miles using all 21 gears. My (2) year old GIANT is shot. I agree with all the prior positive comments made. Posted by Jim Wheeler a 37 year old Weekend Warrior riding a Motiv AL9000 from Stow , Ohio USA on 07/18/01

Hi, Saw that you live in Santa Clara. My wife and I were looking at the Motivs at Cosco and wondered if they were any good. I used to ride a Bianchi. I'm now 62, wife 59, and we just want something to ride the trail at Los Gatos Creek or along the shoreline on Sundays. I was worried that the Motive bikes might be hard pedaling or have other problems. The price is right. What do you think? Thanks. - Re: motiv bicycles
I too have been shopping around for a bike and I just saw the Motiv bikes at Costco earlier today (7/21/02). They look pretty impressive, but I'll give you my opinion on a couple of things I noticed that I thought were odd and which are worthy of investigation. (Maybe this will help you if you haven't purchased a bike yet.) The front sprocket, where the pedals are, have a cheap looking clear plastic sprocket guard. Also, the brake handles that you pull in order to stop the bike, are made of black plastic. Both of these bike parts seem like something that could break. These are my negative comments about the bike. Otherwise, the bike looks great and seems to be of reasonably good quality. The bike I looked at is the CA 480, 6061 Series at $159.99. Hope this helps. - Re: motiv bicycles
I saw this online and felt it best exemplifies my thoughts on mtbs, both high and low end. If you plan on riding a lot... get the best bike you can afford! You don't want something cheap between your legs at high speed on a rocky descent... (insert cheap joke)... If you're a trailriding kinda person, get a bike that'll hold up. A real bike. Get a hardtail at first, if that's what you can afford. You can always sell it later to upgrade to a FS bike, if that's the way you want to go. If you're a bike path kinda person, buy something from your local bike shop that doesn't have full suspension. Same money, better stuff. Come on, why do you need full suspension to ride a bike path, anyway? Posted by ZG a 32 year old riding a A Sugar 2 from Sherman Oaks on 05/29/02

I just picked up a Motiv Vortek. It has dual suspension with adjustable shocks, aluminum frame, 2 piece crank, 24 speed with gripshift handlebar shifters. On the frame, there are welded tabs for front and rear disk brake system. I'm going to convert it over soon. Has anyone heard of this bike? Any comments on it? It rides well and looks awesome... Oh Boy, I just read all of the posts on this bike. Wow!! Ok, so I'll stick to flat trails and still have fun. BTW, I was surfing to get info on this bike and what I found was a bunch of guys flaming each other. This was a sad sight. It wouldn't hurt for all of you to grow up and give facts instead of nasty comments. (especially for those who are supposed to be professionals) Have a nice day... Posted by Leigh on 07/06/02

- Re: motiv bicycles
Did you ever see a post of I have been racing my motiv for two or three years now, or I have been riding Northshore, MT Kamikaze or 24 hr. endurance rides on a Motiv? I own a shop I work on these Motiv's, Next ,Huffy, and Roadmaster etc. all of the time. Since I have been open (4 months) I have seen one Klien QuantumII and one Specialized Stumpjumper pro. They were both owned by the same guy in for wheel truing, that is all that they needed. However I get bikes like Motiv in all the time for pedal's, cranks, bars, brakes, shifter's, forks, wheels etc. most of the time to fix it is more than it is worth. Real bikes bought from a real bike shop gives you durability and longevity in a bike, when you are going to ride off road. I have never seen honestly a dept. store bike last more than 2 years off road. So hear is a question if you were going to go off road driving not riding but driving would you go buy a used Ford Pinto because it is a good deal? I'm a 190 LB guy who loves the downhill and I ride a MOTIV. Don't compete or anything, sure I'd smoke a few in my class (over 40) who compete on their more expensive bikes. Those who truly don't benefit from high end components generally represent the majority, I see "Ted" up here all the time! Point is, riders like me aren't trying to shave seconds off a loop time. I've ripped down my area's best places and discovered my own seceret spots, some of them are world reknown downhills. MOTIV is still together less new crank bearings. I paid about $275 for my bike. - Re: motiv bicycles
Ok here goes. The MAIN reason not to buy a dept store bike may not be the bike but the dept store. Have you ever seen how those bikes are setup???? I wouldn't want to ride it across the street the way most of them are setup.who do you think is assembling those bikes? Definitely NOT a pro bike mechanic, it's the same idiots who put up the displays in the store warehouse or whatever (remember the displays that fell and injured people?)if they can't even assemble display correctly IMAGINE them trying to put a bike together Then the same people who saved $50.00 by buying a bike at dept store complain when they finally take it to a shop for a tuneup and the shop charges them a lot. SO why not buy a bike at a shop for around $200.00 and then you will have the benefit of a properly assembled bicycle AND if there is a problem with it, you will have somebody who is happy to fix it for you likely without charge.
