 Mongoose D40R -- opinions?
I'm thinking of getting a Mongoose D40R. Any opinions on this bike? Is it worth $300? Thanks.

If you don't mind a heavy bike it should be fine.
What type of components are on the bike?

I wouldn't get it. A good full suspension bike costs at least 800 bucks. The Mongoose D40R is very cheap and will not last you very much. I'd spend 300 on a better equipped hardtail. The D40R has cheap components and weighs close to 4 tons. Okay maybe only 3 tons. If you want a mongoose get a DX frame or one of their Newman frames. Not those cheap Y frames like they sell at Wal-Mart.

    •  Re: Mongoose D40R -- opinions?
Um, I think this bike is a hardtail, with basic low end components found on most bikes this price. But it is heavier than most 300$ bikes too. It sounds like you are shopping at a large sporting goods store. I tested this bike, and I didn't like the frame or fork one bit. It felt too cheap to me, even for a 300$ bike.
btw, the cheap fs bike you are thinking about is the d50i, and mgx something.

I own a Mongoose D40r and I like the frame with the shocks and everything I think that helps on torn up ground and big hills. The bike rides vary smooth and I would recomend it to anyone who loves Mongoose bikes. I have a yellow, 21 speed, D40r Mongoose mountain bike and I love it.

WHAT!!! $300.00???? Last time I checked it was priced for $149.99 at Wal-Mart. A friend of mine bought this bike a month ago and took did some cross country riding. He complained the suspension sucked, the componentry sucked, and the axle on the back hub on his back back tire magically bent causing his back tire to slam on the swing arm, sending him face first. If you want a good bike, buy one for $700 and up at a bike shop. If you want a great bike, buy one for $2000 and up from a bike shop. P.S Look at this bike from GIANT called the Warp DS1, this full-suspension bike comes with 24 sp. Alivio/ Deore, 100mm travel Judy XC fork, dual Formula disc brakes, and a lot more! It's only $850. This bike kicks ass!!!

You also have to remember, almost all Wall Mart bikes need some kind of rebuilding. I own a DXR and I'm constently fixing it.

If you get a chance check out the revised model of the Mongoose D40R. This now Bright Candy Apple Red, revised forks and rear and entry level Shimamo Sure Fire V-Brakes/shifter. I like many of you brought the Yellow D40 and its been in the shop from day 1 almost. I'm going to try out the new Mongoose XR250 to see if better luck

i've had the mongoose D40R for a year now and it has not been a disappointment. With the tlc that you should give any bike the D40R should last you as it will me many good years. My b-days comin up in a month and i plan on buying new rims, gel seat, chrome pedals, gloves, all made by mongoose. at that time i plan on completely reconditioning my bike down to the smallest part. (by the way if u can send me a repair and maintenance guide for the D40R or the mongoose D-series in general that would be very helpful. you can send information to pimpbisquick@hotmail.com) i got my D40R for $215 at wal*mart. and beleive me the places i ride beat the $#!t out of my bike and it still ride as good as the day i got it. The D40R is in my opinion a best buy don't pass this one up my friend. P.S. check out the new mongoose bikes i think they're either the X-series or hte X1-series

ok its me again. recently the rear deraileur was shredded by a 1" thick peice of elm. The stick had branches all over it and it just wrapped around the deraileur stressing it to the point of it "exploding". Im getting a new shimano deraileur for my birthday. In spite of this incident i still consider the D40R to be a good bike. While i was looking for a new deraileur.i saw 4 bikes that caught my eye. check out the new series of full suspension bikes from GT. Titanium frame, shimano deraileurs and shifters, rock shox frontand rear suspension, (the rear suspension being pneumatic. The bikes cost between $700 and $1300. But it doesn't hurt to look.

if you like for a $250 you can get the d60 which is the better one , the bike is worth it, don't be fool and spend a lot for nothing more than a name .
I have the d50 and I ride it for 24 to 30 miles 2 to 3 times a week and I really like it .

The frame and shocks r great. BUT the derailers r a piece a crap. I have a red one . I just got it back from the shop. i was gettin fixed cuz both deraileres were bent. But now its workin fine. It's a heavy bike but great for ne one who likes simple mountain bkin. I would've gottin dis diamond back i like but im limited on cash so dis was good for what i paid for it

If you are looking for an inexpensive bike to start out on, this seems good. I bought mine for $150 @ BJ's Wholesale. The Frame looks good, is solid, and you can alway's upgrade the components. Just beware of the derailers. They're not the best and break easy. But like I said, you can always upgrade.

i dont know about the d40r, but i just got a mgx, its not the best bike i have had, but i like it, it looks good and i only use it to get to and from school, and occasionally take a 5-10 mile ride, i have not had any problems with the bike since making a few minor adjustment to the derailers and brakes because of bad assembly, i think it is a fine bike that i got for $99 a wal-mart! if your on a tight budget i would atleast look at one.

It is fine for daily transportation. Put some slicks on it and ride it on these pothole infested Connecticut roads. Good for around town and back and forth to the gym. It is a bit heavy but it suits me well as I couldn't care about off road.

  •  Re: Mongoose D40R -- opinions?
I have a D40R and really like the bike. It looks very hot, can jump curbs and moderate hills and basically does everything I ask it to do. You can spend alot more for a bike but if you are just starting to ride trails or only do it occasional it will do fine. If you are a serious rider that does alot of hard jump and abuse your bike then go ahead and spend double or triple the cost for a marginaly upgraded mtn bike.

If you ask me I think that the mongoose d40 is a good bike but you could get better. all my bikes are mongoose and I love it but I've had the d40 abd it is good for average to rough riding and if that is all you do, buy it otherwise it won't last long but itis very upgradeble

In Canada this bike is the CCM Cliffrunner II. I bought it as an inexperienced rider to break into the sport. It seems to hold up well and I haven't had any real problems with it. The frame is decent but the hardware is a little cheap. I feel that this bike can benefit from better parts and although it is a little bit heavy, it works for a heavier rider like myself.

My roomate has just purchased a D40R. I looked at it and told him he got the short end of the stick. This bick suks. After a hard 60 hour work week this bike would make me want to vomit. It's heavy, the suspension is dirt cheap, and in all reality, the design looks like crap. I do not recommed this bike to anyone. If you have it, sell it. If you don't have one...don't ever buy one. If, however, you can steal one...you might get your moneys worth.

Actually the bike isnt that bad, for the money you get a decent frame that is welded together well, all components on the bike are upgradeable and you could have a real awesome bike if you wanted to. So don't come in here and go play with yourself "sticky fingers"

I bought a Mongoose D40R. I do feel it is a little heavy for my liking, however, I beat the crap out of this bike daily -- I do not go over things, I go thru them -- and it's holding up well. Components aren't the best, but they are holding up. I'd have to say it's the best $200 I've ever spent. My friend has a Cannondale and I had no problems keeping up. And who gives a crap what a 10 year old has to say?

a mongoose D40R is not worth any more than $200 dollars because it doesn't stand up to the name of the mongoose.

Mongoose is a well made bike, even if you buy one from Wal-Mart. I bought a Zero G for me and a DXR for my girlfrind. Both decent bikes for downhill, I just came down Mt. Spokane yesterday, kept up with the Moabs and Diamdbacks

I Am lookin into buying one, because i can get one dirt-ass cheap, and i'm makin the switch from BMX so i don't really mind a heavy bike, Granted the BMX bikes are light, butthey suck for trail riding, i can't even tell you how many times i have slammed the rim soo hard that it takes an 8 spoke tighten to work the warp out or ot a million sticks caught in my wheel. think of it this way, it's either a full-suspension mountain bike or a cheap BMX bike that will bend or break every time out on the trail. and since i blew $5,000 on a YZ125 motocross bike, all i have is around $120
