Anyone have any positive or negative experience with modifying the vertical dropouts for single speed conversion.
After dropping my chain on Saturday and having the Surly Singulator sweep all the way to the back of my freewheel, I got fed up and machined about 2.5 mm off the inside of my dropouts foward towards the chainstay.
Gives me enough play to run a straight chain and seems to work fine so far. The only thing I notice is that the hub nuts only sit on the dropout at the back of the slot by about 2 mm. It has full bearing on the front and the top of the drop out.
Anyone ever had any experience or issues with this type of conversion? Posted by JamR a 49 year old Cross-Country Rider riding a a few bikes from Capo on 11/22/04
At the risk of ZG'ing a reply since I'm not a SS'er yet....
Have you looked into an ENO eccentric hub? They seem to be a better idea than a singlelator or stripping metal from your dropouts. I'm thinkng of putting the new disc version on my hardtail as soon as it becomes available.
