2002 Schwinn Mesa headset ID is: 1 1/8" according to epinions: http://www.epinions.com/bicycles_2002_Schwinn_Mesa

For COMMUTER RIDING: Get an adjustable stem (takes the guessing part off the equation) and pair it up with swept back riser bar. http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=20044&subcategory_ID=5235

If more height is desired, get a threadless extender: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=12679&subcategory_ID=5230
May need headset spacers for profit fit depending on the length of your steerer tube.

For OFFROAD RIDING: Get the proper length and rise of the stem coupled with riser bars fitted by a knowledgeable friend, or visit a bike shop.
