 2001 Specialized Hardrock
I'm a beginner and I am thinking about purchasing a 2001 Specialized Hardrock because it is on sale. Has anyone ridden this bike? Is this a good bike for beginners and is it a good bike that I can upgrade once my skills improve?

I was looking at www.bikeusasandiego.com and it was on special for $199. Check out the site under specials and mountain bikes (hardtails).

With all due respect to Ppik, the Hardrock is a reasonable bike, but there are other considerations. $499 is a pretty good chunk of change to spend on a bike that is near the
bottom of Specialized's line of MTB's, add a decent pair of wheels and you're looking at least $600. Everything on it is OK, but not great. You might consider a used bike in good condition like Specialized's Stumpjumper. I've seen two in the "Recycler" for $300, brand new, many of them cost a minimum of $1,000 and some models went up to $2,300. The Stumpjumper came with all the good stuff, minimum Shimano LX or comparable in-house stuff. They made a lot of them, so they are relatively easy to find, and were an industry standard for many years.

My 1993 Stumpjumper was a good deal lighter than a friends 2000 Hardrock and cost me $150 less ($350). Plus it came with LX-XT drivetrain and just about all of them were spec'd with Shimano SPD pedals. The same M-2 frame was used for many years and is worthy of any upgrades. Finally, the Hardrock is set up for a more "upright" riding position, and as you get increasingly serious, you'll be hampered by this set up and have to change the stem and handlebars out.

Here's an example out of this weeks "Recycler"
      FOR SALE
      Price $300.00 Firm
Specialized stumpjumper M2, xtr derailer, xtr rapid fire shifters, and Marzocchi bomber z2 front shock.

XTR? Now that's a smokin' deal! And a Marzocchi Z2 fork to boot!

Make sure the frame is the right size for you.

The first time you ride your bike its gonna be used. Why not start off that way and save yourself hundreds of dollars? My first bike was a garage sale special. I got me a decent Jamis Dakota for $65 and there werent nothin wrong with it. When buyin a used bike your probebly gonna wanna put other stuff on it like peddels and a new seat and such and thats ok.. The only fear in used is a cracked frame but that's kinda rare. Be sure and tap the frame with a mallet or the plastic handle of a screwdriver on the down tube, crossbar, chain and seat stays and listen for a sweet ring. If it dont ring... clunks or thudds, beware.
