All things being equal, and with most of my riding being done along the Chicago lakeshore or in the midwest, is it worth an extra $80 for upgraded wheels, fork, and 'comp' crank on the 6700? I have a good deal on both (rebate), but only one of the two can be selected. No other brand (at this time) is applicable. Any thoughts? Re: 2001 Trek 6500 or 6700
I have both bikes (one for work, one for play) and I like them both. All things being equal, I prefer the 6700 in its stock configuration. It's considerably lighter and handles like it's on a rail. The riding position for the 6700 is more 'race' oriented while the 6500 is a bit more 'upright' as befits the trad XC bike it is. Spend the extra couple of bucks now, rather than upgrading later (as I'm doing...).
