Re: MONGOOSE D60?
This is a lower end cross country bike. I have a d50i Mongoose that I bought at Costco for $280. The d60 is sold there now. The main difference is that the pivot point is in front of the bottom bracket...an improvement to reduce "bobbing" while cranking. Both bikes weigh around 33 lbs. The components are low end as reflected in the price. I had to replace the chain within 2 months. The bearings are very cheap throughout the bike and are not sealed. You will have to clean and regrease them often. I replaced them with a used Mavic wheelset with sealed bearings and, in doing so, reduced the weight. In my opinion, the most important area on a mountain bike is the gearing. My Mongoose came with a 24/34/44 front chainring set and a 12-28 rear cluster. This was too high for me and the stock cranks were non-adjustable. I put some adjustable Coda cranks on (22/32/42) and a 11-32 rear cluster and now the bike has more range for climbing. The tires were heavy and wearing quickly so I replaced them with some better/lighter ones. The brakes and shifters work fine. The upgrades I did cost me $100 and reduced the weight to 29lbs. The aluminum frame and welds are strong. The shocks are lower end, without alot of travel, and heavy but because it is fully suspended, it works. There is no lockout. The D60 has a aluminum rear triangle with good clearence. Bottom line is that it is a good bike if you don't have much $ and need something that will work and to figure out what you want in a bike for eventually trading up. You will carry the stigma of a bike not purchased at a bike shop and some others will want to throw this bike into the "Huffy" catagory, but it is a better bike. The Mongoose D40, I believe, is a steel bike sold at WallMart, weighs around 40 lbs., and would be in this catagory. The base model FSR Giant at Performance Bike Shop cost around $450 at XMas and was about the same as the Mongoose with the upgrades I mentioned. If you have more dough...the sky's the limit. Steve-o, you seem to know alot about bikes, so what is a good suspension fork to upgrade this bike? Posted by Big J a !2 year old riding a PSYCHO BI from VA on 02/28/01

Re: MONGOOSE D60?
I don't think I would put a good fork ($200-$350) on this bike. The existing suspension works fine for cross country riding. If you are using it for big drops and jumps, you need a downhill bike that is heavier and stronger. There are alot of good FSR bikes selling for about $1000. There are alot of front suspention hardtails with good components for half that. Try to get the best bike you can and ride it. Riding exerience will teach you what is best for you. I'm happy with my Mongoose because it preformed well for what I invested, but more importantly, it has taught me what I really want in a bike. I now want a 25 lb. or less FSR with a rear shock lock out with riser bars and the right gearing. Hopefully I'll get one soon. Posted by Steve-0 a 39 year old from Carlsbad on 02/28/01
