Visiting and looking for SoCAL trail suggestions
We are coming from Michigan to climb Mt. Whitney in Lone Pine, arriving Aug 7, and are looking for some good trail recommendations for upper-intermediate to advanced MTB riding. We've heard good things about Oakhurst and Kernville and rode Wilder Ranch and Black Mountain during our last trip.

We expect temperature to be a bit of an issue so we're looking for non-desert riding.

If you have any specific suggestions, please post. Thanks!

Go up Highway 395 a bit to Mammoth Lakes. Awesome riding.

Thanks Gringo; someone else also mentioned Mammoth offline; that's fits perfectly with the travel. We've also heard good things about Oakhurst.

Oakhurst is very cool but it's on the other side of the Sierra from Lone Pine.

Between Whitney and Mammoth is Bishop. Lower Rock Creek is excellent. Haven't ridden the Upper Rock Creek, but hear it is very sandy if much more beautiful. Buttermilks just outside of Bishop are a maze of double-track at the base of the Sierra. Also, hit the opposite side of the Owens Valley, the Inyo Mountains and White Mountains. More double-track, but much more remote and adventurous.

Sorry, GR... The doctor has retired and moved back to Caladan. :P

RE: Kernville...it's a bit low-elevation for August. Temps will be in the 100's F. Try these two instead:

    Kern Plateau
    Giant Sequoia NM

What area are you staying in? I could get you over to some spots in the foohills and areas around Glendora,San Dimas,Azusa,etc...... You post as a racer,we could do a tour of Bonelli Park, its used for cross country racing.

Temperature is NEVER an issue in Southern California.

I've posted some GPS plots here:
    http://www.bitofexperience.com/home/disorganized-events/mountain-biking

    that may help.

There is some epic riding here, you can't go wrong.
