 Schwinn Ranger bike gears question
My wife just bought a Schwinn Ranger bike from Target. I know it's not a bike from a bike shop, but it's what we could afford and it fit her needs (she's not planning on any serious mountain biking, not yet anyway.

Here is my question - the bike has 21 gears, with a shifter on one side that has 1-2-3 and the other side has 1-2-3-4-5-6-7, so the combinations of the two make the 21 gears (1-1, 1-2, etc...).

This is her first bike that has gears. It's been more than a decade since the last time I rode a bike and that was a ten-speed road bike. With what I had, the lowest gear (best for climbing hills) was 1st gear. But on her bike, 1-1 (presumably the lowest gear) is still so bloody loose that it's not very good at climbing. That doesn't seem right for a bike, particularly one sold as a mountain bike. Any thoughts? Is the gearing different on these bikes, or on mountain bikes in generally, such that 1-1 IS NOT the best gear for climbing?

The gear should be fine; you need to find a steeper hill.

1-1? meaning the small front chainring and the large ring on the rear cassette? If so, yes thats the lowest gear. However
on the Ranger. I believe the front maybe a 24 or 26 tooth "granny" and 32 tooth rear. Thats not all that loose when youre on a semi-grade on a fireroad. Like the other post says, try a steeper hill or shift the thing in a higher gear.

This is something like a surprise to you i guess. As your wife needs this bike or she wanna surprise you by making this act. Even i make some little kind of surprises to my husband by writing his articles on best essay writing service blogs and also giving little gifts.
