  • Del Poniente Trail - #DelPonienteTrail

Socal - San Diego County - Poway, California NickNames: #DelPonienteTrail

Take the Ted Williams Parkway exit from I-15. Follow Ted Williams Parkway east, turn left (north) onto Pomerado Road, and follow it to Pomerado Hospital. The western trailhead for Del Poniente Trail is at the southeast corner of the Pomerado Hospital parking lot. Since the parking lot is reserved for hospital patients, staff and visitors, mountain bikers should park on a nearby street and ride in. Thomas Guide page 1170 C6

    • Trail UpdateDel Poniente Trail - Poway, Cali-Rode this trial with my 10 year old son on 14 May 04. Glad we brought lots of water. It was a scorcher out there. After riding the Lake Poway trail, clockwise direction, we decided to leave the vehicle parked at the lake and ride home. We took this trail over the few hills, past some spectacular homes before arriving at the east end of the Twin Peaks grade. Since we were riding our 40 pound free-riders, we had a long push in front of us. Once on top, the decent down the west side of Twin Peaks was great. Lots of deep, loose sand and dirt slowed a few turns, and the constant cloud of red dust gave new meaning to the term “powder coating.” But, I can’t wait to get back up on that hill with a lighter trail bike. The trail has a lot to offer in just a few miles. It has “technical”, it has “straight & fast drops”, it has great views, and it’s not all the way out in Borrego Springs! Yes, it is an in-town trail and yes, there are fences and backyards, but what a great way to get from Pomerado Rd. to Lake Poway, without pressing a crosswalk button more than twice. Oh, and keep an eye out for horse “remnants.” The “undeveloped area” referred to in the post below (dated 02-5-98) is now very developed and well established. Bottom line: The fun part of this trail is on Twin Peaks and the rest looks more like dirt, power line access road. …worth a look.

    • Trail UpdateDel Poniente Trail - Poway, Cali-This is a great short ride, with good elevation gain and a good mix of fast and slow technical down hills.

Last Rode it on Oct 20,2000.. The recent rains have help pack down the loose sandy sections and there is only one section with a lot of loose rock.

Combine it with Poway Lake trail for a great 20mile ride. I try to do this ride every Friday after work, bring the lights and ride it in the dark..

    • Trail UpdatePhilip J. Erdelsky-Del Poniente Trail runs through an undeveloped area in the middle of Poway, just north of Twin Peaks. The views are excellent. There are a number of side trails, including one that approaches the Twin Peaks. You cannot ride up to Twin Peaks, but you can park your bicycle and walk up a steep path. The east end of the trail enters a residential area containing several other trails. Follow other trails if you wish, but try to remember where you are so you can go back the way you came. Don't worry about getting lost. The area is not very large, so you won't be far from civilization. However, it would be advisable to take a Poway street map with you so you can orient yourself if you emerge onto the city streets. And if you are injured, there's a hospital right at the trailhead! An extensive description of a ride around Poway that includes Del Poniente Trail has been posted at http://www.lanz.com/pj/bike/rpoway.htm.
