From I-210 or I-15, drive CA-2 (Angeles Crest Hwy) to Buckhorn Picnic Area. Just east of the picnic area parking, there is a turnout on the south side of the road, near a dirt road with a locked gate. The trail starts at this gate. Thomas Guide page 4648

    • Trail UpdateMt. Waterman Trail-From the locked gate, ride a short distance up the dirt road. The trail leaves on the left (east). Traverse a level stretch through open forest to a creek crossing (often dry) in a grove of big cedars. From here, climb up and to the east over sandy and rocky trail to a saddle between Kratka Ridge and Mt. Waterman. The trail turns west and follows the ridge up to another saddle, then switchbacks up to the summit plateau of Mt. Waterman. Ride around the horseshoe-shaped 'ridge' to the high points (all ~8000 ft.) at the top of the Mt. Waterman Ski Area. There is a summit lodge on the northwestern corner of the mountain which is sometimes open in summer. Once when I rode here, they were having a jazz party at the lodge! To return, ride back the way you came (recommended) or take one of many dirt roads descending through the ski area.
