Socal - San Diego County - Miramar NickNames: #MiramarLake
Use the Mira Mesa exit off the I 15 Frwy just north of Miramar Naval Air Station. Travel east to Scripps Ranch Blvd. and turn right (south). Drive about 1/2 mile to Scripps Lake Dr. and turn left (east). Miramar Reservoir is on your left in about 1/2 mile. Thomas Guide page 1209 G3 |
This is great news for all those who enjoy the biking, skating, jogging and strolling at the lake. The road presents no challenges to anyone on a mt. bike(completely flat, paved five mile loop) but there are a number of trails above the road which intersect it at various spots and can provide some interesting short opportunities to work on technical skills. Not exactly "epic" rides but an easily accesssible area for just blowing off steam after work on a nice summer evening. Just be courteous to all the other users and the occassional rattle snake that likes to doze on the single track (I've encountered that twice) out here.

Since the September 11 stuff, the route over the top of the dam has been closed, and the 5-mile loop is now a 9-mile out-n-back. As of Feb 10, 2002, the mellow singletrack trail below the paved trail is open, rideable and with only a few mudspots. The upper trails are dry, but you'll have to deal with houses and closure signs.
Bring a picnic lunch, a fishing pole (license might be a swift idea, too) and your bikes. Miramar is perfect for that, and it's your responsibility to teach your kids not to laugh at the guys on full suspension bikes, DH helmets and pads on the paved trail.
