Socal - San Diego County - Borrego Springs NickNames: #CoyoteCanyon anza-borrego desert

Coyote Canyon is located in the Anza-Borrego Desert. Check-out a San Diego County Thomas Guide for directions from your area. Once you make it down Montezuma Valley Road, turn right on Palm Canyon Drive. Go half way around Christmas Circle and continue east on Palm Canyon Drive for approximately 1/2 mile. Make a left on DiGiorgio Road. You'll be heading north. Continue until the road ends (approx. 4 miles). This is where you want to start. There are several ways to get to Borrego Springs. The point is to head north on DiGiorgio Road. Thomas Guide page: 1098

    • Trail Update4-24-99 - Rode with 8 others. From Twilliger to Christmas Circle (computers read 30.8 to 35.2 miles -- so, you can figure it's about 33 miles). AWESOME! If you like a variety of terrain, you're in heaven: rocks, bolders, sand, water, mud, up/down, wet, dry, soft, hardpack, from mega techncial to cruise along simple. This is NOT, repeat NOT a ride for a beginner. You should be an experienced rider in better than "good" condition. Make sure you bring plenty of liquids (during warmer months, 2 bladders and 2 bottles would not be overkill) and some food. After about 1/2 mile there is no civilization until you return to Christmas Circle. Due to the varied conditions (water and plenty of sand) it's highly recommended that you bring lubrication. We encoutered some 4-wheelers.
Unfortuantely, they were typical -- beer drinkers. So, be careful; they can be reckless and have little if any respect for a bike and it's rider.

    • Trail UpdateCoyote Canyon-This is a great desert ride. The route which I'm describing is a 24 mile out and back which follows part the historic Anza Trail. Mount up at the start of the dirt road. Continue north on this double-track. On weekends you'll see plenty of 4x4 action. This was an epic 4x4 trail until the area was closed at the Upper Willows. The climb is gradual. At three miles you'll pass through the Desert Gardens. There are plenty of Cholla Cactus, Jumping Cactus, Teddy Bear Cholla and Ocotillos. Watch out for them. At about 4 miles you'll come to your first stream crossing. The water is crystal clear and refreshing as you ride through. At this point you are surrounded by mountains. The area will become more rocky. About another mile up you'll cross the stream again and start a steep rocky ascent. The ascent is only about 3/4 of a mile if that. Then you'll drop into another gradual ascent. At this point you can continue to Sheep Canyon which is about another 5 miles or you can follow the Anza Trail to a gate which is another six (Upper Willows). At the end of Sheep Canyon or the 'gate' you can turn around and start back. At either ending point you will have climbed 1,600 feet. When you combine that with soft sand that spells leg burner. The descent is surprisingly fast. Turn that big gear as you hammer back to the starting point. The scenery is spectacular. I'd recommend camping out and enjoying some cold ones but, this adventure can be comfortably done in one day if you have to be back at work the next.
This canyon is closed during the summer for the Big Horn Sheep to water. Call the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to find out when it's open.
