"Great indeed the reputation of the ancient beer-- Said to make the feeble hardy, Famed to dry the tears of women, Famed to cheer the broken-hearted, Make the timid brave and mighty, Fill the heart with joy and gladness, Fill the mind with wisdom, Fill the tongue with ancient legends,......
Only makes the fool more foolish."

This is some beer, I hear. Not a lite beer. Review of Nectar Ales IPA , brewed with the finest ingredients from Humbolt County (I took this verbatem from BeerAdvocate.com) The following review by RangerDanger7, real name Thomas JeffersonNote: The west coast mug clubbers who rated the bottled version of this Pacific IPA as being below 4.0 did so more than 12 months ago. I wonder if the recipe or quality control has improved since then? The more I drink this the more I like it.The brew turns my pint glass into a beautiful copper-colored cylindrical room. A big creamy head recedes to leave broad, thin lace curtains. The pheromones of Mister Pine and Miss Grapefruit begin to waft through the air as they walk into the room.Mister Pine and Miss Grapefruit approach each other and gently kiss as they fall onto the fluffy, floral mattress bed. They waste no time as they begin to make love in a floral bliss. The resinous Pine gentleman and the lady Grapefruit gently roll around in the malt-framed bed of sweet wildflowers. The thin malt bedframe supports this lovefest, though it does so almost unnoticed. The juiciness of Miss Grapefruit begins to show. As Mister Pine finds his flavor rythm Miss Grapefruit comes effortlessly. These lovers are of medium build and have soft creamy skin. The gentleness of each beguiles the other, but both assert their raw nakedness on the other in a symphony of flavors which builds to a crescendo. The afterglow is a perfect liquefaction of Mister Pine and Miss Grapefruit tiredly absorbed into the wildflower bed. The malt frame creaks under the weight and vigor of the young lovers as it finally collapses under the recent exuberance. Ready for another?

Another gem of a review from RangerDanger7This time it is the Humbolt Brewing Company Pale Ale:Pours a slightly hazy pale amber. Fluffy head, then partial film left.Sparse lacing. Aroma of carrot raisin salad, citrus, pine, and wildflower. Not "IPA strong," but strong for a pale ale.Taste comes as the little brother to Humboldt IPA. Very nice. Floral, sweet citrus, and pine hops. Yes, the hops in this definitely fall on the sweet side. Nice, though nondescript, malt backbone. Finish is a little weaker in flavor than beginning. Aftertaste is a little hoppy and a little malty; slightly roasty. This beer actually has more flavor when its colder, unlike many brews. I'll have to have more than one of these for a better assessment, but a strong entry into a crowded pale ale field. This one doesn't go unnoticed due to its hopping and mild sweetness. This great PA entry would be easy to pick out in a blind taste test of pale ales.(WTF?)

Flying Dog has some really good beers and a creative brewer.

Just tried a MacTarnahan's Blackwatch cream porter the other day and man was it good. Hard to get your hands on and expensive as all get out, but good. Very smooth with a hint of the oak cask they aged it in. Oh man.

Those interested, the homebrew festival is happening the first weekend of May at Skinner. Beer, beer and more beer with plenty of styles you don't normally find. Some of the best commercial and homebrewers from around socal will have offerings there.

HLD, the brewery is running full steam and should have some fine offerings in the very near future. Just put a barleywine in cold storage that is hovering around 13% (scary strong, you can taste it), a sweet stout, two Scottish ales and a Pilsner Urquell clone that are all nearing "time". Have an IPA that will be brewed up over the weekend and it should be ready in a couple of weeks, along with a couple of porters.

Monday night rides start out of my house next week...

No, I have "pen-pals," but beer talk is like my porn. You know, you can do without it, but sometimes it's fun to have pictures of a perfectly pourd Guinness to add a little spice to the session. :-)

I just read in a beer trade paper that the owner of Stone Brewing is selling the brewery to a large, out of state company that also happens to own Rolling Rock. Even worse is that they have to eventually lay off many of the current employees and bring in the larger corporation's 'own brewing professionals.' The article also said they are probably going to make their beers more appealing to 'a broader demographic,' whatever that means. The only quote from the current owners Steve Wagner and Greg Koch was that the deal was extremely lucrative.

Wow, I think this is going to suck. Should make STP happy. I hope they keep the "Ba$tards" around. On a semi-related topic, I did come across another very worthy and affordable Belgian though- Ommegang. Brewed in NY using authenticate ingredients. I gave it a try, very, very nice.

I introduced Sgt Brown, a known drinker of Bud Light and other fizzy pee-water beer, to Chimay. I offered him the Red Label, and he enjoyed it thoroughly.

Next, the Tripple, then Grand Reserve.

Chimay rules. We had the Red Label or the "Premiere", which is at 7% alcohol and goes down really smooth. Has yeast notes and round flavor.

We also had the Blue Label or "Grand Reserve", which is at 9% alcohol and also goes down the hatch rather well. This had less yeast notes and a sharper/carbonation feel to it.

After we polished of the 7 or so bottles of Chimay, it was on to the Stone Pale Ale, then after that gets kind of blurry...... :)

Of the three primary Chimays (red, blue, whiute label), I prefer the garden-variety, ho ho, red label. Slightly colder than they'd suggest, in a large Chimay-style goblet and I'm all dialed in.

On a different note, we were at a YardHouse on Saturday and I noticed they had Lindeman's Framboise on TAP. The bartender didn't know if it was filtered, but either way, it's the first time I've been anywhere to see that product in a KEG. If it had been the Kriek, I might have slipped one into the succession of Black & Tans.

Get her on the Kriek, it's more tart but still without the bitterness she ascribes to "beer" and doesn't like.

I should have asked what size glass they served it in, and what it cost. That has to be an expensive keg, eh?

Bert Grant's Imperial Stout. I highly recommend this tasty brew. The initial scent is rich with coffee's and chocolates and the pour is an added pleasure, as the very dark and rich foam generously top the pungent, almost black brew beneath. The copper head has nice body and leaves a fine lace and the nose detects a nice follow-through to the initial sniff of the top of the bottle. Nothing disappointing as you gently quaff your first mouthful. A mouth-filling, warm pleasing blend of coffee and chocolate dominate with a pleasant tang that is neither wimpy nor overpowering. You are tempted to leave it on your pallete for a second or two before downing it and seeing how the aftertaste comes off. The aftertaste is not bad either, no lingering bitterness, but yet the flavors remain as the warmth of sunlight now gone warms the stones in the garden in the cool afternoon shade. A definite dessert beer and worthy of a try.

Ok, I hate Indian beer. Never had a good one to wash down a huge Indian lunch buffet, which btw are amazing post ride feasts. So we ended up at a new Indian restaurant the other night and there were the usual blah beers... Kingfisher, Taj, Himalayan Blue, blah blah blah and Dansberg. Hmm, never heard of that before so Dansberg it is. The bottle arrived ringed with a slogan "a beer like no other." Um, right. So along with some spicy papadam I took my first sip. Not bad. Second sip. Wow. Why is this so good? Nice and malty, good balance of sweetness and hops. Dang, not bad! Turns out it's a nice strong lager with 5% alcohol. Apparently it's relatively new to the US. I wonder if it's a BevMo yet?
