 Best Beer IV
Today being my birthday, my friend bought me a
12 pack of SAPPORO bottles. Not as tastey as
my beloved Newcastle but not as horribly awful
bitter as Tennents!

These great beer posts got me to try all the Stone offerings.

I conclude that the Double Bastard Ale is A+.

    Happy B-Day FatCat. <:-)

Fatty, I just want to take you under my wing just like Dusty, Inkpad, Sgt Brown and others did to me with my riding and bike knowledge. You really need an education in bikes, beer, life.... I haven't given up hope on you yet, but then again, I am a glutton for punishment.

Sapporo is not beer. Beer is water, yeast, hops and BARLEY MALT. Not rice, not corn. Sapporo is not beer. Thank you, that is all. (PS- neither is Coor's, Bud, Miller, etc...)

Disagree. The ONLY time fruit is acceptable is in combination with wheat. And I don't mean a slice of lemon. I mean *IN* the brewing process.

Other than that--no fruit. Reinhiesghebott for ever. Or some such spelling.

ahhhh, that IS acceptable, I have been know to drink Frambois (sp?) - and that's got raspberries in the second (bottle) fermentation

I meant squeezed into the bottle....

True dat. Lemon wedges should be thrown back across the bar.
Oh, and drinking from the bottle? Only when camping/boating etc., or when the dishes are dirty.

Besides, everyone knows the best way to drink beer is upside down, straight from the tap.

Si, si, wheat is acceptable and I believe there is some kind of exception for Weissbier in the Reinheitsgebot, but for the fruit, even in brewing? Well, it's mighty tasty, but it ain't beer. Gottdamn Belgians and French......

If anyone puts a lemon near my beer, I'll kick em in the hopsack....

I thought Sapporo complies with the Rheinheitghebot. It was formerly a German brewery, after all. Check it out. I haven't recently, but I think they're all malt.

Nope, rice and cornstarch are ingredients. Come on, seriously, can't you taste it? I've had Sapporo before and asked the waitress to stop serving me liquid rice cakes. click on technology and then on ingredients.

Oh pa-leeze. Sake is brewed, not vinted like wine. And it's got more kick than most beers. Don't get me wrong, I drink way more beer (and wine- antioxidants, ya know) than I do sake. But if I have to choose at a sushi bar between a weak beer and a nice, cold sake....

Front wheel man is right on this one: Sake' is brewed just as one would do with beer, except that there are not usually any flavorings added (like hops or different roasts of rice). It's referred to as "Rice Wine" in the context that some malt beverages are "Barley Wine".

You missed my point. I wasn't comparing methods of creating the concoction, I was commenting on the ingredients. I've enjoyed a good sake a few times (and a really bad one once). I also like liquor and wine. Hell, at the river I've even been known to drink a Coor's Light, but I wouldn't call it beer either.

Let me put it this way; Sake is a good drink, but not beer. Just like that Look you have is a bicycle, but not in any way shape or form a mountain bike. See?

I went to go buy some more Double Bastard yesterday and--THE HORROR--someone bought all the remaining bottles a couple hours earlier!!!

The oh-so-knowledgable beer guy @ Whole Foods recommended the Alesmith Anvil Ale, ESB.

It's no DB, but it's bottle conditioned and very tasty.

    Alesmith

I also picked up a Mortney Double IPA that I'll report on shortly.

Yeah, see: it's a good thing. It all you ever drank was DB, you'd be ruined for enjoyment of lesser beers. The Alesmith is good stuff and you should just make it your mission to try every beer in the Whole Foods cold box. Then, you move on to the cheese counter.

The latest is....well not sure yet. We'll either meet at Chaney Tr. instead and climb up to Insp. Pt. and do Merrill and Sunset, or meet at La Tuna and do a loop.

Same place, same time but be prepared to drive a short way to another trailhead depending on the weather. Either way we'll end up at Lucky Baldwins for much beer and food cooked in beer.

Whoa-ho! Check out the beers, especially the IPA's at Delaware's Dogfish Brewery!

    http://www.dogfish.com/beer/index.cfm

The 120 IBU version of their IPA sounds like a muthafuquah of an ale!

Anyone seen or found any of their stuff in SoCal?

Dogfish lists STONE BREWING as a distributor, and also suggests they've got the 60 Minute IPA at some SoCal Trader Joes.

The aroma of both the coffee and chicory thrown into this stunt-stout are detectable, but the absence of milk sugars leaves it thin on the palate and leaves a short half-life on the head. My light-beer buddy actually asked for one after he tried a sip. Not bad, but not Worthy.

Nah, chicory doesn't taste bad in either, although I don't have any particular need to find it in my beer.

I imagine today's weather in San Diego is pretty similar to that in New Orleans and if it weren't Mardi Gras right now, I'd sure enjoy sitting down on a bench in Jackson Square with the paper, a plate of beignet, a cup of chicory coffee and my cell phone to conduct business, lahk a gennelman.

Cafe du Monde's beignets are great, but they've duped tourists into thinking crappy coffee and chicory somehow works well together. Don't forget they added chicory in the first place because they didn't like the taste of coffee. Kind of like adding a lime to crappy Mexican piss beer to make it taste better.

Actually, I think they began drinking straight chicory, as the injuns did, when coffee shipments were blocked during the War of 1812. They couldn't get coffee, so they gargled what they could get, and then mixed it with coffee when the trade routes reopened. That's how I heard it, at least.

Lime in beer is because it makes for a great photo.

That's the way I heard it about chicory as well - although it may have been the Civil War, with it's Union blockade of the South, that resulted in the addition or substitution of chicory (a native plant) for coffee, an imported one - many in the South had grown used to the taste by war's end, and added chicory to coffee for flavor even when they didn't have to...they also despise steamed milk in the Big Easy - you have to scald it in a pan for a true Cafe au Lait....

On my trip to Oakland for business, I had some free time and found this bar in Jack London Square. Barclays

The first evening, I sampled many of the 21 beers on tap, including local brews, Belgians, cask conditioned ales, and of course, Guinness.

I walked into the bar on the second evening, wearing my Nema jacket due to the cold and pending rain. Chuck, one of the owners, was wearing a north Face jacket with an emroidered Guinness logo. I told him I needed that jacket. He in turn said, "get me some Nema shorts and we"ll talk." He then said Nema, shorts are his favorite riding shorts, and that my jacket clued him in that I ride. the guy is an avid mountain biker, rides an Ellsworth Truth, and loves beer. Instant drinking buddies!

I polished off a Lost Coast Downtown Brown, 6 or 7 guinness pints, some hybrid brew from wheatbeer malt and barleywine yeast called "Oh whatever," McEwan's Scottish ale, Courage Imperial Stout, and Young's Old Nick. Then he broke out the private reserve.

We drank all three Chimay ales, a couple Barley wines I can't pronounce, and a Tripel Rochefort 10. AMAZING!

This is perhaps the best bar in America. Thanks Chuck!

I get a state government employee rate which gave me a 600sq ft place for $140 a night. (2 bedroom, 2 bath, livingroom, kitchen, breakfast area)

Question- I wanna be in the wedding, but do I get to be the best man, or must I purchase a bride's maid dress?

To hell with Delaware, and the whole east coast, anyway.

Last night, I quaffed an Acme IPA, brewed under the Acme label by North Coast Brewing. It worked far better than most of the products I'm used to from that brand... Snappy with a Cascade nose and light to medium amber color/flavor.

I don't think they've ever offered Coors light there. The fest works by ordering a beer from the list and then drinking it. :-) Which in fact is harder than you might think since the bartenders at Lucky's aren't known for thier patience.

Hmmmmm, Stone, Sierra Nevada, Lost Coast... I'm still liking Guinness and my new found refreshment after a hot n' dusty flogging is Warstiener. I'm thinking it's the Budweiser of the GmBH but the quality comes through in the cripsy taste. Full of cotton panty goodness. And yes, if you're still wondering, I'm is still alive and cranking. Woe unto the wildlife of Riverside county and other various parts of the 909. E me if ya give a rat's a55. ;-)

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than to be selfish and worry about my liver.' --Jack Handey

    THIS JUST IN>>>>>>

Beverages and More is now open in the Valley. One is Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys on Sepulveda between Burbank and Oxnard. The other is in Canoga Park. DDawg just came back from there and bought about $40 worth of their 750 beer varieties and got $10 off. Nice.

Oh, hell no. But when I return to the homeland there in Chatsworthica, I can add that to the Green Jug loop if we need special provisions. We've got a BevMo a lot closer to us for interim needs.

That's what I thought. We'll have to do a beer ride next time you're up here.

Kewl! But when one went to the cooler to claim one were they confronted by a headless, armless, legless stump of a knight querying them about the weight of sparrows? He was probably lurking on the rack below the Monty Python's Holy Grail Just curious...
