Good thing I procrastinated... I can't find a hotel room nearby. Looks like I've got an excuse not to do it. :(

No Tortouga, he is a working turtle these days and would certainly live up to his call sign. The Solvang ride is no walk in the park so he is staying home. I am torn between doing the Solvang ride or racing the next day at Keyesville. Would love to check out a new course. Are you going to be there for Solvang Mike? Let me know if you have a group to ride with.

        one week to go.
I'm going to be suffering around mile 80. Not enough mileage. If you see a guy in a "death ride" jersey and Landshark shorts, hangin' out at water stop, kick me in the a$$ and tell me to get moving. ;-)

I've been riding centuries for the last 4 out of 5 weeks and I hope I'm ready for the double.I'll know after this week as I was going to go do Solvang, but the opportunity to do the Butterfield Double came up.They are letting us have another go at it,although it's unsupported this time we will still get credit towards are goals.100 miles sounds pretty damn easy right now. I hope I make it.

Mike you are an animal and need medical attention. You need to put down the controller to Downhill Domination and get to a hospital and see somebody about this long distance condition. Really we are worried.
I did 60 miles today and it is killing me for some some reason. Solvang is not going to be easy as I have to work late Friday night and then drive up there. Have fun on your double century you nut!

I kept an eye out for the Backbone Adventure Racing team. No Luck.
Had a great ride. Perfect conditions. Overcast but warm. Started around 6:45. I hooked up with a lot of pacelines through out the day while still trying to stay within my own pace. At the 70 mile SAG stop I had to break out my secret weapon. A can of Starbucks double shot esspresso. That really hit the spot and got me over the hill at the 85 mile mark. A couple of hammergels and a PB&J helped me over "the wall." Finished just after 1 pm feelin' good.

So I can safely assume that by the fact you are sending e-mails you and Pain Freak are still alive after yesterday's Butterfield make-up? How did you guys do?

My wife got tied up (no, I didn't do it, she had plans!), so I ended up doing a training century yesterday, from Upland-Fontana-2 laps @ Bonelli-Hwy39-San Gabriel bikepath to -I-10, then home. I timed it perfectly......got home @ 100.64 miles. I felt pretty good, and with you two guys pushing me (or pulling me would be more like it!) I should be fine at the Hemet Double on 4/9/05.

That sounds great. I have band rehearsal on Thursday and a gig on Friday, so riding is likely out of the question both those days. As far as I know, GMR is still closed on Saturday, so your plan sounds good.

Congrats on a great time for the Butterfield! Definitely a tougher-than-expected double. How'd you guys feel at the end - with all the 100's you're doing, imagine you didn't have any problems. Anyhow, hope you enjoyed your first double. STP and I rode it in the typhoon a couple weeks before and it was downright nasty - his write-up said it all. I did the Death Valley DC last weekend which was awesome. Lots of flowers and green, snow on the Panamints and even a 5 mile wide lake in the valley! The roads were very rough and well before the end, the shoulders and back were screaming at me to stop. Time was 13:05. You considering Mulhulland on April 16? It's a real bastid but is a great ride. Starts and ends in Agoura and climbs every tough hill imaginable.

Anyone interested in a training ride on Apr 2nd or 3rd? I'd like to ride PCH and Mulhulland and some of the canyons to get ready for Mulhulland. Or, maybe Valencia/Canyon Country area or, any other place with some hills is good. E me if interested.

                    Dave

I'm a little late getting here, didn't realize it had been posted about.

I've done a lot of tough rides over the last 6 years and I have to say that was one of the toughest ones. .Towards the end when the biking gods saw fit to give me not one, but two flats and spare me from killing myself.I was getting to the point where I would have probaly hurt myself if I'd had much further to go.I had some new pains I'd never had before and was more then a little worried that I was hurting myself possibly permenantly.Fortunately it worked out and we got the 200 done before anything seriously happened.

When we started out I told both Mr Bonk and his brother (who has done over 20 doubles) that I was going to ride at my pace.I wanted to go somewhat slow and do between 15 to 18 on the flats.HA! These guys were up over 20 and I was chasing them for the next 100 miles. Mr Bonk did come back once and helped light the way when it was dark. That helped a lot, both in the beginning and at the finish. The pace was fast and it was all catch-up for me. We got to the century mark and I wasn't really paying that much attention as we were going to break at the 120 mark so that had more of my interest. Then it dawned on me, I'd just done my fastest century ever. Not what I was trying to do and my plan of conserving my energy had flew out the window almost from the begining. We continued to click along like this although our pace had slowed substancially. And I was not complaining. I hadn't trained well for the climbing of this route as I thought it would be similar to the Amtrak route as we took over 30 miles of this route. This was the climbing section though of that route. Not bad climbing just the kind that goes on forever. Going over the mountains in the San Diego County area was another suprise for me.Good and painful. The descent was great. They had those turns that were posted at 25 mph and this is where you get to catch and pass a car or two.It might be for only 30 seconds or a minute or two,but that's fun. And now I know why they have double and even triple century rides. It's all about digging down deep and finding the ability within yourself to muscle it out.To go further then you ever thought you could. To do something so many others are unable to accomplish. This type of riding is similar to what it takes to do a marathon.Although the marathon is over in 3 to 6 hours where on the bike you're looking at anywhere from 11 to 18 hours and more. And believe it or not,it is fun. Hard and very difficult, but fun nonetheless.
