Buy Ned Overend's book, Mountain Bike Like A Champion by Ned Overend and Ed Pavelka, and read it carefully. That will get you started.

    Second suggestion, join a club.

I would recommend you the Dave Morris book, Performance cycling also The cyclist training bible by Joe Friel. Both books are geared towards the racers. I personally like the morris better.

ride with people faster than you.
    rest alot. and repeat.
    drink alot
    stretch alot
strenghten for balance and good form.
    rest some more.
forget the books you'll end up over-training
    you are the coach.
    get to bed early.
