Not trying to start a religious war here, just looking for some perspective.
It seems that Chumash has seen a lot of "maintenance" in the last couple of months. I ride it at least once a month (usually twice or more), and early in the summer, some of the more washed-out spots were filled in with some nice solid dirt. Not too hard, not too soft. Nice.
But lately, it seems that whoever is doing the trail work is just dropping some really sandy dirt and not packing it down. The result: sand all over the rocks, and unrideable trail. On one tight s-bend I wasn't expecting it, and when my front wheel washed out, I nearly did an Evel Knievel right off the mountain.
So, my question is: What's going on here? Why such sandy work? Is this what's appropriate for the area? Seems like even hikers would hate hiking up a sand dune, right? Posted by DeathB4Decaf a 32 year old Cross-Country Rider riding a '05 Giant XtC2 on 08/18/08

Re: Sand on Chumash?
I have been riding chumash for 10+ years and have seen it go through many changes/repairs/washouts. Given that fact that it's late summer and dryer than a popcorn fart up there, as well as everywhere else, trails and roads really soften up due to hiking, riding and lack of moisture. Once we get a little rain these repair areas should pack down.

Thanks! I've been riding for just a couple of years, and this is the first year I've really had the legs to climb Rocky Peak regularly, so I don't yet have a grip on how a typical yearly cycle plays out on these trails.
